Stage 2 - Up-pipe question

So I've been at Stage 1 for the last couple of years & have been feeling the urge to go stage 2.  I have an Cobb-V1-ap, & bought the Cobb DP & used STI catt back.  Question is to go Stage 2 do I need to do deal with the up-pipe?  Not concerned about the power gains but more wrt any reliability issues keeping the stock up pipe installed.  Heard that S2 can create more heat & cause the up-pipe to degenerate, break down into the turbo.  I don't drive my car hard, but I will enjoy the extra buzz of additional horse power.  I also hear that S2 will give you more turbo whirl, but that's ok, I'm no spring chicken & I think my kids are making me deaf already wink.  The turbo sensory feedback should be part of the fun.

One last question, if I get all the hardware installed, but need another weekend to do the AP mapping, will that hurt the car in any way?  Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Stage 2 - Up-pipe question

The extra noise from the turbo is mostly due to the DP replacement - you're going from a cast iron/catted piece to a thin wall sewer pipe.

The reason you gut or replace the UP is because of the cat it contains. Because of the higher temps that occur at stage 2, this cat gets hotter and can break apart and go straight into the turbo.

Cheapest route is to gut your own UP, easiest economy route is to replace it with a non-catted unit from a 2006+ WRX or an STi.

Re: Stage 2 - Up-pipe question

So Cobb doesn't discuss the up-pipe at all, I suppose it is because they don't sell one.  So if I go stage 2 with the down pipe & cat back this fall & then source out a used up pipe & gut it for a spring install is this too risky a strategy?  Or should I just hold off get everything & do it latter?

Re: Stage 2 - Up-pipe question

OK, I went to the link on what happens when you don't replace your up-pipe.  Looks like I will hold off & go Stage 2 when I source out an up-pipe.  Thanks for the links to Unibomber, definitely much help.  btw, if I was to buy an after market up-pipe, is Perrin worth the extra $$?  Otherwise who else make a good one.  Might decide that the time & effort to gut a used one may not be worth the extra cash.

Re: Stage 2 - Up-pipe question

Fit of aftermarket UPs has been called into question both here and elsewhere. With all of the work involved just to get the damned thing out, I'd say go OEM all the way...

Re: Stage 2 - Up-pipe question

arrow-up it fits in a flat rate (US) box, so shipping isn't insane. No idea if it crosses the border. PM me some postal codes and I'll find out mid week (first chance I'd get).

Re: Stage 2 - Up-pipe question

According to everything I have read there is absolutely no difference between gutted OEM and aftermarket in terms of performance

Re: Stage 2 - Up-pipe question

I was stage 2 for a long while with a non-gutted up pipe.  Zero Problems, that's zero problems, and my car sees WOT nearly every time i drive it.  When I replaced the up pipe, a year ago, I went from 16 to 17 psi.

sooo... you choose.

I ran for a little less than a year at Stg. 2 with the stock (non-gutted) up pipe. Also zero problems. Had roughly 95K when Stg. 2 and then 105K when I swapped the stock UP with a non-catted STi version so roughly 10K miles. Felt faster throttle response with the new UP and maybe a little more boost. Most shops will charge more for the UP install than a DP because of its location.

Re: Stage 2 - Up-pipe question

I would recommend the STI one because it has a flexible section and they are so stinkin cheap and readily available. Good decision to wait and do it all at once. I definitely preferred pulling everything out the top vs. trying to break loose my exhaust manifold, and you won't be pulling your DP twice. Plus, it's a little easier to line that turbo back up with that flex point.

Re: Stage 2 - Up-pipe question

FWIW I've had my car at Stg 2 16.5-17psi since 10/2006 and 11,000 Miles.  Currently at 53,500 miles.  Maybe its still ok because I don't drive the car much in warm weather (winter car only), but my UP is still stock.  I have an sti up to put in, but haven't felt the need to tear it apart.  YMMV.

Re: Stage 2 - Up-pipe question

So over the Christmas break I want to gut my up-pipe.  One question I need to clarify is that if I opt. to not put in the EGT probe back in, I will plug the hole with a M12x1.25 bolt.  Would I need to add the 2.2k ohm 1/2 watt resistor where the sensor plugs in or will the AP override the error code from the missing cat?

Re: Stage 2 - Up-pipe question

Nope, both have no cat.
To the OP.
Me, I'd be worried I missed some tiny part of the cat and it would be sucked up into the turbo during a spirited run some time down the road.
