Went to the dragstrip today, slightly dissappointed?

Decided to make a few runs when my friend went to the drag strip today with his Iroc Camaro.

I admit, I'm not trying to totally get all the performance out of the car, as its my winter DD.

I did look up and found my best run from when it was stock in '05 and <500 miles.  14.9@93.4  2.14 60'.

Today, with 53,600 miles, p225-50-16 conti dw's, cobb stg 2 tune 16.5-17 psi, Helix DP, sti axleback and 3/4 tank of fuel I ran:

2.001  60'
9.009  1/8
78.13  mph
14.076 1/4
96.62  mph

This run was a 5K launch with a tiny bit of clutch slip, and it spun a tiny bit.  I really was expecting a 13.
the other two runs were a bog 4K launch, and a clutch slip 5K launch with a missed 3rd gear.

maybe some of it is also not knowing where to shift.  I feel the car noses over above 6K, maybe 6500 rpm.  I'd have to make a bunch of runs, and try varying the shift points from 6K-7K to really tell where to shift.

Anyone else consider 96 ish traps low?  I dunno.  maybe not.  as a direct comparison....
I did run a guy with an 08 Legacy spec B with stg 2 work, but still stock turbo.  He did say it was a pro tuned car.  his best run was a 13.6 or 13.8 at around 102-3.  The one run I missed 3rd, he had slowed down to a

1.95  60'
8.97  1/8
78.81  mph
14.003 1/4
98.50  mph

Maybe as close as I could expect, given his .5 displacement advantage.  but it is heavier too.  So hard to say.

grrr.  now I know why I don't run this car at the track.  If all I do is race suv's in the snow; I'm much happier.  lmao.

Sounds like better tires and taking the spare tire/running with a near empty tank would get you into 13's smile
Wouldn't be too disappointed.

arrow-up Agreed. And don't forget, many people underestimate the importance of skill in drag racing.  You're only off by a few hundredths. Some practice would get you there.

Come out to play once we get some snow.

My car is a lot worse for the wear of living up on North T. for a while.  Still enjoy mighty wide sliding corners out in the stix north and west of town.

If I'm reading his post correctly, he ran a best of 14.076,  his friend ran a not-best of 14.003.

Re: Went to the dragstrip today, slightly dissappointed?

yeah.  14.07.  I guess the big thing is that I was thinking it should trap around 100.  maybe even closer to the good runs of the lgt at 101-102.  maybe that's not a realistic hope, but I did read quite a few posts on nasioc where stg 2 cars run near that.  Especially since it was fairly cold out at around 45 degrees.  maybe poor shift points were the cause.  Hope my car is running ok.  lol.  guess Ill check what the boost reading is on the drive to work tonight.  assuming the accessport readings are accurate.

Re: Went to the dragstrip today, slightly dissappointed?

96 trap is about right for an OTS Stage 2 EJ205.  I trap 100 with a VF on a conservative tune.

You shouldn't be concerned about your trap IMO.  You could easily get into the 13s with a better/aggressive launch and that is right where your car should be.  This all seems 100% normal from what I have seen.

Re: Went to the dragstrip today, slightly dissappointed?

Yeah, ots cobb stg 2 - 93 octane map.  Maybe it would have helped to reset the ecu before going to the track.  I just didn't think about it.  OK, if most guys have to have a turbo upgrade to trap 100+ then Im not going to worry.  I did check the AP results and show Im still hitting the same boost numbers I was (last time I checked and had to adjust the wg arm to hit target boost).  3rd gear mostly between 15.9-17.0.

Hopefully by this time next year Ill have more mods and get the results I wanted.

in my experience, absolute garbage launches and the best launches changed my trap speed by 1mph... sounds like you need more power if you want faster traps

Re: Went to the dragstrip today, slightly dissappointed?

I was hoping to be in the upper mid 13's (13.5-13.7) at closer to 100 maybe 101.  I know the et is achievable, but I figured a canned (ots cobb) map at the high end of target boost stg 2 (17) would get me there.  Based on some peoples traps at stock power, around 94-5; I thought I had gained more for my mods.  I know the car is faster than when I was stock, but I was only seeing 13psi before I adjusted the WG arm.

Maybe Im just being silly.  In the spring, I may do a turbo and innercooler mod, and if Im down a bit on power now, that may be the case after.  Although I have no reason to expect there is an issue.  Maybe it was headwind, shift points, whatever.

Since the Legacy owner only ran what he did, with more mods than I have and a protune, and .5l more displacement; chances are I'm right where I should be.  /thread.  lol.

My friends Cobb ots mapped stage 2 STi ran 13.3 and a identical STi but pro tuned ran 12.9. Protune is something worth considering. Next, hitting 100mph on the stock turbo is a stretch. Stock STis hit 102-104. Hammy already mentioned a VF turbo + supporting mods put him at 100mph

Buy an STi VF series turbo STi IC STi pink injectors and a fuel pump then get a protune

FWIW - I can remember when my 92x was "Stage II" protuned. I used the Accessport 1/4 mile timer (which doesn't account for roll-out) and pulled a 13.2. Launched at 5k, slight wind in my face on an empty on-ramp at roughly 1000ft, 75 degrees Fahrenheit. I haven't launched since that time and I am no longer Stage II.

On an actual drap strip, I am positive I could have gone 13.0 ish

with a stock TD04 turbo  lol if so I highly doubt it

edit: I see stock TD04 turbo WRX's hit 12s, if the turbo is capable of that why do people do VF turbo swaps  confused

Yeah man, I really have no reason to lie. Just going off what of what my Accesport read, and the approximate adjustments for wheel roll-out.

Tune was targeting about 22psi and tapering to 18- ish IIRC.

EDIT: Also, no spare tire/jack stuff and pretty much no gas. That may shave 150lbs.

As far as VF swaps go, they are mild turbo upgrades and relatively cheap, safe and easy to tune. Which is why people do them.

Re: Went to the dragstrip today, slightly dissappointed?

I would be a little dissapointed.

I only ran my car once Stage 2 at the track and had a HORRIBLE run.  Stock I went 14.8 at 92 and my only run stage 2 it was a 14.x at 94.  I am a pretty good drag racer but the launch felt horrible and after that I told myself it isn't worth it.... this is my daily driver.

My car is MUCH faster than a 94 mph when it isn't heat soaked at the track.  I have run a good dozen or more 100 mph cars (99-04 Mustang GTS (stick and auto), 350Zs (stick and auto), G35s (stick and auto), stock 09+ WRX, Cobb Stage 1 newest generation MS3 (well, it was kind of even), and I am sure I am fogetting a bunch) on the street and have never lost to one.  I crush cars that trap in the mid 90s (R32, FRS, stock MK5 GTI, I am forgetting a ton)..... destory them.  I only get beat by cars that trap at over 100 mph....

Having a shift right at ~ 93 mph doesn't help us either.

So.... maybe your car isn't as "slow" as you think.  In todays day, a 96 mph car is pretty slow.

Yep, a VF swapped 92x basically gets a car that's a little faster than today's premium sedans. And many of the more modern vehicles these day make their power so much more readily available.

Sometimes it feels like people forget the cars the are actually driving. It isn't meant to a straight line driving beast.

Re: Went to the dragstrip today, slightly dissappointed?

Here is a way to see how fast your car is if you are more worried about actual power (trap speed) VS getting a good ET at the track.

Here is a video of my car going from 40-120.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-4b1LGFd5xQ

If you time it and then look at car magazine times from 40-120, you can see where it falls.  Then you can see how it stacks up with other trap speeds in magazines (sure 40-100 would also work but 120 or even 130 gives you more numbers to play with  biggrin).

Obviously you need a good flat road to do this.  When I did this a few years ago I had a video player (think I used real... IDK) that would break it down by 1/10th of a second and it was fun (if you are a geek like me) to stack it up against other cars like say the MS3 to see how they would do in a race.

For my car, it is clear that it should trap around 100 (I recall it being more in the 100-101 range even with slow shifting) on a good run (it was in the 30s when I took the video). It takes a little over 18 seconds to go from 40-120 (I don't have the raw video handy to show the exact time but close enough).

According to C&D, the MS3 takes 18.5 to go from 40-120 and trapped at 99.  http://media.caranddriver.com/files/200 … -specs.pdf   The 350Z trapped at 101 and did it in 18.3 http://media.caranddriver.com/files/nissan-350z-1.pdf  Do this with several cars and you will see where you are at.

In reality, I value my trans/clutch too much to race this car at the track.... but I know what it is capable of from the times in the video and the many encounters on the street.

Re: Went to the dragstrip today, slightly dissappointed?

Thanks for the replies.  gives me something to think about.  Really, I just need to find a friend that runs 100-102 and see where I'm at.

My other vehicles are all faster than this car, so my sense of speed is a bit effed.  lol.  It just feels slow, no matter what I do.  The mustang runs 13.0's at 108.   Firebird runs 11.0's at 130+ and my zx14r is a 9 sec bike at more than 150 (although I haven't ran it yet).

Turbo, innercooler, injectors, and a pro tune are in order.  For sure.

Just keep in mind it is what it is. I love my buddies stroked and cam'ed 87 GT. But he also loves my 92x, so it really is relative. I probably don't need to say this but if you're looking to go fast, keep building those v8s. If you're looking to go fast around turns, to have a solid track performer, build the the wagon. But please dont think you can build a "fast" car (by today's standard) easily with a 92x. 92x's are average sport wagons stock, "quick" with the cheap mods. A fast wagon takes $$$$$ type of dough. I'm sure you know that $$$$$ into a 5.0 = 10 seconds or less.
