Tell me about the exhaust

I was crawling around under my car yesterday, admiring the machinery, and noticed the muffler is CLEARLY stamped Subaru. On closer inspection, it looks a lot like the STi muffler, not the dual outlet WRX unit.

Re: Tell me about the exhaust

The 05 WRX also has a single tip muffler and for some reason sounds a little better than the 9-2x... maybe it was just me, but I've heard my friend's 05 wrx and it sounded a little deeper than mine. He has no exhaust mods.

Also, 02-04 were dual.

Obligatory sig with extensive power mod list for greater respect:
-JDM oil pan, JDM dipstick, STI oil pickup and baffle plate for ultimate oil flow, STI midpipe for uber power gains.
-WetOkole front seat covers for ass sweat stains
-Drawtite hitch (no wiring) for a bike and a trunkmonkey for shits and giggles

Re: Tell me about the exhaust

Is the flow increased enough to result in any power gains?

Re: Tell me about the exhaust

$150 delivered isn't bad its on the highest end of what they are going for.  I paid $100 delivered but looked around for a bit.

The stock system is very restrictive, so you can expect slight gains in hp and quick spool, also it's got a nice sound.  It's a good bang for the buck upgrade and in my case it made a nice finish peice to a full system without being too loud

Re: Tell me about the exhaust

I will be putting a Nino's Uppipe and Helix DP mated w/ my STi's OEM Catback Exhaust for the 92X.

If you all could wait for few more days, I can take side by side pics difference b/ 92X OEM Exhaust Vs. 04 STi's exhaust including the piping size

I'm very curious that Saab has utilized an '05 STi exhaust w/o STi stamp on 92X for the added look and slight performance.

Re: Tell me about the exhaust

I wonder if the dealer techs would say anything abot installing an STi muffler, since it's "technically" OEM.

I would not think so.
It's probably an increase (if any) of 1-3 hp?

The dealer must proof that the aftermarket parts do damage before they can deny warranty.

Technically one would think that you could install ANY of the parts shown here without warranty repercussions.

Re: Tell me about the exhaust

Chad, thanks for your response, I really like the idea of both HP gain, albeit small, as well as a better exhaust note, as I thought the 9-2 was really quiet (I am picking it up next weekend), especially compared with my current vehicle. <don't get me wrong, I won't compare teh S4 vs the 9-2x, they're both VERY different vehicles.

What I appreciate here is the helpfulness and knowledge, I am new to the WRX/STi scene and want to do as much research as possible before jumping in/onto mods.

Hmmm, maybe...
once you'll have it off, can you look for a part number? That way, we'll know for sure if it is the STI exhaust.

Absolutley not.  I've held the two exhuasts together side by side and can tell without out a doubt they are not the same.  The 05wrx uses a single tip now too.

Agree!

I just found out about it just now.
I think 92X comes w/ '05 WRX OEM exhaust.

ChadW,
Any way you could confirm the piping size of 92X OEM and STi exhaust (can be both '04 or '05)

My 92X is still on the way..
Hopefully it will arrives on Wednesday or late this week.
I can't wait anymore! :arrgh:

Re: Tell me about the exhaust

Someone I know is thinking about selling his stock STi turbo-back. A worthwhile mod? No price yet as he's still on the fence. Any warranty concerns? It seems OEM STi parts should be kosher!

If 92X's catback exhaust has same piping size as OEM '02-04 WRX then it's worth the upgrade.
(the STi axle back is the only worth part to upgrade cause I think the mid pipe to axle is the same size)

Still you can't really feel the gain other than you will hear nicer rumble like the STi.

Unless you can find them cheap like $100 shipped (cheapest going rate now) then I would suggest you going for uppipe / downpipe.

As far as warranty concern, I don't think the dealer will care about it unless they are being an SS about everything.

Re: Tell me about the exhaust

STi axle back is 2.25 vs 2 for wrx/9-2x.  I'm not sure about the size of the midpipe, though I think the STi is lacking a resonator that is present on the 9-2x/wrx.  As far as the downpipe and 2nd cat, there is no flow advantage to the STi unit, some have said that the dp cat on the STi is more robust to make up for the fact that there is no cat in the uppipe.  If you could only replace on part of your entire exhuast system, the uppipe would be the way to go.

As far as dealer concerns go, check with your service manager, mine was very cool, he's into racing and was very encouraging for me to mod the car.  Unlike subaru dealerships where everybody is modding it and SOA needs to take a hardline stance, Saab does not, I may be the only person or one of just a handful who mods a car from my dealership so the service manager has no prob taking car of it, as long as Im bringing him failed saab parts and not failed aftermarket parts.  That being said, I've only taken the car there for two oil changes and zero problems.

I think I'll hold off for something that will show more gains. Might go with the Helix, too.

thanks.

I installed an STi catback from MY05 STi onto MY04 Impreza Wagon and it was a direct bolt on.

I would assume the same with 92X as well = bolt on.

Wish I had my car with me as of this time.
The dealer's taking it so long to get it to me.
