Re: F1 2013 Season

I've been searching for this for the past couple of days (maybe I just suck), but is there a live stream through NBC? I don't have a TV right now and blew it by missing Melbourne. Options?

Re: F1 2013 Season

Awesome race!  I thought Vettel would win when he won pole and took the lead at the start of the race, guess I was wrong.  Vettel usually pulls way ahead when he takes the lead.

Great win for Kimi.  Great win for Lotus.

And I was amazed at Sutil staying in the lead for a while.  I think he should have stayed out longer with those tires, he was still in the lead when he made his first pit stop and Vettel was not close enough to make any passing moves.

I see shades of Senna vs Prost x 2. Going to be interesting to see what happens inside some team politics between now and China in 3 weeks.

Re: F1 2013 Season

Senna vs. Prost was world champion vs. world champion.  Vettel vs. Webber  (and Hamilton vs. Rosberg for that matter) is world champion vs. not-quite world champion.  I think we will see a lot of public deference to Webber (already have, actually), but in private, no real consequences for Vettel, and Newey and Horner will be telling Webber to get over it and move on.

Re: F1 2013 Season

arrow-up At least Hamilton acknowledged that Rosberg did a better job managing fuel and tires and should have been on the podium.  He sounded a bit embarrassed to have benefited by the team orders.  I'm not a Hamilton fan but my opinion of him took a step up with his comments.

Re: F1 2013 Season

That was an interesting one for sure. I haven't followed F1 long enough to give a better comparison than Senna v. Prost, but this season should be pretty captivating. I really like Hamilton and his comments on the podium approved that for me. I think Webber has every right to be upset.

Re: F1 2013 Season

arrow-up  if you get the chance, see if you can find the film (it's a documentary, about two years back) called Senna. Fantastic film, even for non-motorheads. It'll give you the story. Changed my opinion entirely about Aryton Senna. I think it was the same crew that did the Truth in 24 about Audi vs. Peugeot in 2010 at LeMans.

True, but in this case Champion status or not, it certainly is going to make for tension in the Garage. It's still competitor vs. competitor, and Webber has be just THIS close so many times that he's REALLY hungry. I wouldn't want to be in his way.  Rosberg may have a point to prove, but between Hamilton's comments (which I missed, got cut off just before Webber's comments by my damned TiVo) and Rosberg's newness, I'd much rather be in the Mercedes garage than the Redbull one.

I have seen Senna (what really got me into F1), but that's the only tension I've seen, which is why I said I don't have a more accurate comparison than that. It's a fantastic film, I've watched it multiple times now. Did it change your mind for the better?

Re: F1 2013 Season

arrow-up radically, for both men. Prior to the film, I used to think of Senna as a maniacal, egocentric baby, Prost, a cunning, focused champion. Afterwards, Senna, a gifted (bizarrely so) winning brings him closer to God so Championships be damned (too much of this Earth) consummate racer, Prost, a cunning, cold, calculated machine.

As for tension between racers, there have been some epic ones in many series (although very few where drivers intentionally crashed others...except in NASCAR) but tension between teammates ... there has been never one so big as Prost/Senna.  As for driver/driver rivalries, there is a new F1 movie coming out about Nikki Lauda and ... directed by ...  this summer, I believe. Damn, my brain is just not to quick with names at this hour.

Prost/Senna was far more overblown than the rivalry really was.  If it was so bad why was Prost a pallbearer at Senna's funeral?

No, when I think of tension between teammates I think of Villenueve/Pironi, Piquet/Mansell, or Hamilton/Alonso, rivalries that resulted in death of one of the teammates or open hostility on the racetrack.  Vettel/Webber has the makings of this type of rivalry, particularly if it stirs up some of the left over rivalry from 2010.

Re: F1 2013 Season

arrow-up  as for Prost being a pallbearer, there were several years of separation, Prost was no longer driving, and if I recall correctly from the film, Prost felt a sense of guilt.  I don't recall Piquet/Mansell being so big, Villenueve/Pironi, yeah Villenueve was driven to take risks in qualifying, but not sure he wouldn't have anyway, he did seem to have a similar take to winning as Senna. Hamilton/Alonso was nowhere near as vehement as Prost/Senna, which you could sense even through my jet hen little 19" diagonal CRT.  I see something similar with Vettle/Webber, and Im not sure that words from any team principal will quell this.  Fortunately the cars and tracks are MUCH safer today, but I would not be surprised to see (most probably) Webber leaving before the end of the season.

Re: F1 2013 Season

I think Webber needs to come to grips with his place in the world, much as Massa has done.  Remember, Massa was world champ for about 30 seconds before Hamilton made a pass for position just before the checker.  But compared to Schumi?  Better get used to being #2.  (though he is showing some signs of life this year, maybe finally, truly, over that horrible crash)  Over the course of a long season, the cream does rise to the top.  I'm betting it will be Vettel, Alonso, Hamilton, Raikkonen duking it out this year.  Should make for a great season.

Hoping Webber doesn't take a break from F1. I'd love to see him on McLaren alongside Button - I don't think that's going to happen though..

Re: F1 2013 Season

Let's see, Mercedes goes testing "experimental" Pirelli tires with this year's car.  Next race they go from backmarker to podium finish.  The FIA slaps Mercedes with a ban on the "young driver" test. Now Ferrari and Red Bull are openly questioning the testing ban and threatening to run their own private tests.  How much more of a joke can F1 get to be?  This is bad even by F1 standards.

Re: F1 2013 Season

arrow-up  to call M-B a backmarker is a bit harsh.  Capable (and had proven it) of qualifying at or near the top, they fall back as their tires wore.  Did the private testing help?  You betcha. Do you wonder if Pirelli "adjusted" the race (vs. test) tires to aid their "testing assistant"?  Yup.  Should all of the other teams be given the allowance?  Yup.  The Penalty for M-B should be they pay for the lower (by $$$) 50% teams testing if they want it.  eek
