It's not so much the deal as the story that goes with it.  Just wow...

I guess he feels it brings focus to the fact that it has a newly rebuilt engine in it.

However... I would just list it as having a newly rebuilt engine. Without the catastrophic abuse story. facepalm

Re: Asshattery on craigslist.

About 5 years ago I had some almost new snow tires on rims from a 1998 Cavalier that I thought I could get some money for so I took out my first (and last) ad ion Craig's list. I received several inquiries asking if if the tires would fit other cars. Even had a couple of people that said they were interested come to my house with their cars that turned out to be other makes and sizes wanting to put the tires on their cars to see "if they would fit". So I'm out in my garage with a floor jack trying to fit the tires on an Accord or Sebring or whatever cars they were. And while I'm doing this I'm thinking "What the @&!$ am I doing!?". Taking out an ad on Craigslist is like spraying Raid on an old wood pile because you're always amazed at what comes crawling out.

Re: Asshattery on craigslist.

lol This thread.

I've only had good experiences selling/buying on CL. People are flakes, though. I offered this guy a fair price on a camera lens, he scoffed at it rudely. Then I saw the same lens for sale on CL for at least a couple of months after. Tool. Then I saw it re-listed with the price I offered.

Re: Asshattery on craigslist.

I never have problems buying stuff on CL - it's only selling stuff that causes headaches. CL is littered with people that lowball you to death and are pretty low on the intelligence scale.

I've sold cars, furniture, used pressure-treated decking, appliances, silver, electronics, lawn and garden equipment, toys - you name it. The price for placing ads is right (free), but that same 'feature' drags in all the mouth-breathing detritus. If you ever want to know where all the stupids hang out, check out the rants and raves section...

I think it comes down to a mixture of how the ad is worded, your persona over correspondence, and luck of the draw.

I was able to sell some old upper intake parts from a Tuned Port Injection system. (3rd generation fbody) ... it went swimmingly, but I know people who will never use CL again.

I've had a nice mixed bag, got some killer deals and sold some stuff for a decent amount, but I maintain that about 9 out of 10 people that respond to ads are jag bags.

To avoid in dealing with CL bullshit like that I simply follow three simple rules when selling at item:

Cash only - gets rid of bullshitters and scammers
Pickup only - gives you the upper hand in negotiating, as they're the ones who drive out of the way to your location
Public location meeting point - so that your private information like address and name remains private, and makes it far safer

If they don't agree to any of those three I don't bother.

When I sold my car (NOT Craig's List) they asked if I wanted cash.  No way.  I didn't want to be carrying that around, even briefly.  My plan, designed for larger sales:

- Meet me at a branch of my bank with a cashier's check.
- We go inside, and you sign the check to me, while I sign the title to you
- I walk over to the teller window and deposit it
- We walk outside and I drop the release of liability in the mailbox (I picked a branch with a mailbox out front)

I never have cash, and the bank has it on video.  We also never were at my house.

Separately, I had a good vibe from the buyer, but that's tangential to the whole deal.  I have seen some of the CL buyers for my friend's pickup, and wouldn't want to deal with them in any way, shape, or form.

Re: Asshattery on craigslist.

Heh - Kijiji is our Craigslist in Canuckstan

I contacted a guy in Red Deer about a camera (it was a good deal but not - hi this is a scam absurd).

Me - will you ship this?

Him - Sure I can ship but I only take cash - no paypal.

(red deer is about 3500 miles from me)

Me - Hi not keen on sending an envelope of cash - what are you proposing.

Him - I get scammed on paypal all the time.

Me - OK how about an interac transfer (basically a wire - but at least traceable).

Him - I need cash or a certified cheque (he seems to have been scammed by paypal but not the rampant certified cheque fraud on kijiji ;-)).

Me - Sorry this is too much exposure - GLWS.

Him - "You wouldn't have any protection; just my word. Sorry it didn't work out." biggrin

Irony is simply lost on some people  big_smile lol

I'd decided on that before I put the car for sale.  One part I was sure to include was the "release of liability" form.  That tells DMV I've sold the car, so that even if they don't take care of their part of the transfer paperwork, I'm not on the hook for anything.  I know people who got notices for parking tickets from vehicles they sold, and I'm not into paying for other people's misdeeds.  My own are costly enough.

Re: Asshattery on craigslist.

I have had slight burns the past couple years on CL, but last month worked out pretty well.

Guy had a picture of a few diecast cars shown out of the box.  A couple of these were 993 911's no longer made, worth $120-160 a pc in the box.

The last sentence noted he had original boxes.

I asked if he would ship.  He said sure, but would only accept cash.

I read the situation.  He was an older guy, Porsche collector.  He agreed to $45 shipped for the 3 911's.  I pay $10-15 per car to ship, so this made the cars nearly free.  I took a picture of the cash and envelope and sent it away with my fingers crossed.  I also had asked if he had other cars, he said yes.

Two days later he says he got the money and sent me a UPS tracking number.  Encouraging.

Only a day later I get the cars in the mail.

Not only were they mint in the box, he had saved the original straps around the doors and hoods and packed the cars so well they arrived showroom fresh.

I find a HAND written note of all the other cars he has.  My god, countless 993s by the same manufacturer, rare ones like 993 Turbo S, RS, Targa etc.

To speed up the story I bought all of his cars in a couple different batches.  Each time taking pics of up to $180 cash, each time getting a mint shipment of cars.

Out of pocket I spent about 350, but kept $1000 in cars I did not have and sold $1000 on eBay that were duplicates.

Sometimes CL is amazing like that.  I know how easily I could have been burned.
