What other cars did you consider before buying your 9-2X?

I'm curious as to what other vehicles people were considering before choosing the 9-2x.  Or was the 9-2x love at first sight for you?  Although I pretty much had my eyes on the 9-2x since July of last year (purchased end of april), I definitely explored some other possibilities:

1. Volvo S40 T5 AWD

2. Subaru WRX Wagon

3. VW Passat 1.8T AWD

One possibility that I didnt consider at the time but seems to be a popular competitor is the Audi A3 2.0T wagon.

In the end, it all came down to the sweet buyer incentives and pricing that i got for my Red Aero wagon. I'm pretty happy about my decision so far, hopefully the true cost of ownership doesnt come to me as a suprise!

Re: What other cars did you consider before buying your 9-2X?

I had been looking for a 2003 or 2004 Impreza WRX sedan. I remember hearing about the 9-2X last fall and checking it out but it seemed way out of my price range. When the GM incentives came around this year and I was ready to buy, it was a pretty easy decision for me.

1.  Volvo S40 T5 AWD smile

2.  Subaru WRX Wagon  smile

3.  Jeep Wrangler (I love the top down)

4.  Nissan Xterra

5.  Acura TSX

In the end I just love the driving of a car too much.  The subaru was the same price and the S40 the way i wanted it made it super $.

Re: What other cars did you consider before buying your 9-2X?

I wasn't really in the market for a car when this deal came up.  So, I had to think fast about what my tradeoffs might be versus waiting.  Pontiac vehicles like Solstice (a convertible for commuting in Detroit, yeah, right), the G6 coupe, or the new Vibe in a few years?  Some forthcoming Saturns (anyone seen the Aura concept car or the Sky convertible)?  Maybe the Saab 9-3 Sport Sedan if I felt like blowing the budget.  I also have to give some credit to cross-town rival Ford for the Mazda 3 and Mazda 6 sedans - especially the interior of the 6 which I really like.

Other designs I really like are the Nissan 350Z and the Audi TTs, but those are just out of my price range and like the Solstice, they don't fit my lifestyle or needs.

But what I'd really like to have had the chance to consider would be European-only vehicles.  There are so many attractive small cars there - including GM's new Opel Astra lineup but also many others including the Audi A2.  I'd love to get the chance to test drive some of those.

Re: What other cars did you consider before buying your 9-2X?

I live in Michigan and grew up on the westside of the state where you regularly accumulate 18 inches of snow over night. So, I always look for All-Wheel, 4-Wheel, or believe it or not Rear-Wheel drive vehicles. My first car was FWD and I promised myself I would never buy another. After that it was only the above mentioned and my newest vehicle was of course going to adhere.

I quickly ruled out...
A3 - FWD
TT - Maybe with a roof rack and enormous cargo carrier on it
V50 - I didn't like the handling
WRX Sti - Insurance was a bit much
WRX Wagon - Getting warmer, but no leather and no nearly as good looking as the 9-2x

And thus the 9-2x

Re: What other cars did you consider before buying your 9-2X?

I had been kicking around the idea of buying, since my A4 had a nice interior but was otherwise falling apart; test drove a Scion tC and it's a nice little car, but dealers are jacking the prices up by adding on so many DIO's. Was interested in the Mazda3 or Mazda6, but i really wanted something faster.

the moment i heard about GM dropping the price during the last week of April, I called a dealer and had the car like the next day.

1. Subaru Impreza WRX sedan
2. Acura RSX type-S
3. Toyota Tacoma
4. Subaru Forester XT
5. Subaru Impreza WRX wagon

Considered all of these within the last year or so.  Ended up with a 92x aero last week and am very happy so far.

Almost the same situation here - my A4 sure was nice to sit in, but I knew it was going to require a whole bunch of repairs. I had been half-looking for a replacement for a few months, and also considered the Scion tC. I do like that car, but it's not nearly as practical as the 9-2x. Thought about the WRX wagon, but since one of the things I really liked about the A4 was the interior, the WRX would have been a jarring change. I know the 9-2x is basically identical, but at least with the premium package it's a step up from the Subaru. Considered waiting for the Mazdaspeed6. But then I heard about the 9-2x pricing, and I knew that was the way to go.

Also briefly considered the Acuras (RSX & TSX), and the Volvo S40 T5.

Re: What other cars did you consider before buying your 9-2X?

Lotus Elise...ordered and everything.  Then Lotus decided it would be fun to jack up the retail price by about $3K during shipment of my car.  The dealer wouldn't budge.  I proceeded to tell them to have fun with the car.  All a matter of principle with me....I should have been locked into the price at the time of my order.  Oh well.

Then I learned of the nice deal with the 9-2x (always loved the WRX and never knew of the 9-2x until late last year) and couldn't resist.  I could've bought two of these for the price of the Elise.

Subaru WRX of course.  I was not really looking at the time, but the deals were too good to pass up and the best part is I am paying the same per month on the 9-2x as I was paying for the SE-R Spec V!! big_smile

Re: What other cars did you consider before buying your 9-2X?

I did a thorough search.  In no particular order:
Mazda3 (a bit tame, great "feel", not turbo),
Mazda6 (too big, great "feel", not turbo),
Legacy GT (perfect, big, a gas guzzler, expensive),
WRX Wagon (too close to Legacy in price),
Audi A3 (too FWD for $25k, engine from heaven, clutch from hell),
1990 Vintage Celica All Trac (too much commitment),
2002 Saab 9-3 (too sloppy, but with a fantastic engine)
Mini Cooper S (too small, lousy visibility)
2003 Mazda Protege5 (amazing steering and clutch feel, buzzy weak engine)

Re: What other cars did you consider before buying your 9-2X?

I considered:
  Mazda 3
  Subaru WRX Wagon

I had settled on the Mazda 3 as it fell in my price range.  Still think it's a great value and decent car.  My wife objected to the looks of the WRX.  But the 9-2x incentives were too much to pass up - I'm thrilled to have a much better performing and fun car than the Mazda at only a couple grand over the Mazda's price.

Mitsubishi Evo RS
Pontiac GTO
05 Mustang GT
C5 Corvette

I went with the option that is most definitely slowest in a straight line but it was also the cheapest by several grand and had the most interior room.

In no particular order, I considered:

Subaru Legacy GT Limited Wagon, Atlantic Blue (I've been lusting after this car since they added the turbo)
Audi A4 Avant
Subaru WRX Wagon
Saab 9-2x Aero
Mini Cooper S (red, white top, white bonnet stripes, rally lights)
Mazda 6s 5 door or Wagon
Mustang GT (My wife REALLY wanted me to get one of these)

Re: What other cars did you consider before buying your 9-2X?

I was lusting after the LGT wagon as well.  If this killer deal on the 9-2x didn't come along I'd probably would've been purchasing one of those soon.

All things being equal I would have preferred the LGT wagon since it has a larger cargo area but the difference in price was too hard to ignore.  With the money I saved I can buy an old pickup truck or something instead for my hauling needs big_smile

E30 M3
E36 M3
B5 S4 Avant
<all 2nd hand>
Mazda 6 (liked the handling)
Audi A4 (hate the new b7 model in person, and pricing ticks me off)
Audi A3 (disliked the fact the quottro wasn't available)

With these deals going on, I figured better off getting the 9-2x now, and putting some $$ aside to obtain the 911 in reasonable near future.....

Re: What other cars did you consider before buying your 9-2X?

I would have been shopping in the same price range as the Aero ended up, so I'd
have been looking at:

Nissan Altima 2.5
Volkswagen Golf/Jetta/Passat
Mazda 3
Honda Accord
Subaru Impreza (but probably not the WRX)
Or, oh the horror, a minivan, domestic probably.

The deals on the SAAB just let me get a wagon (bonus), AWD (bonus), and something
much sportier than anything on the list above (big bonus).  I wasn't shopping up in the
Aero class until these rebates rolled around...
