Land Cruiser's are bad ass.

It will fit a family in it.  It will just have a hard time of getting away from an unsafe situation, stopping quickly to avoid one, and it doesn't even have airbags.  Not even for the driver.  Again, 12 mpg.  It will cost a fortune in gas.  Rent rent rent.

P.S.  Land Cruiser's what?

badass.

Aren't first gen Foresters fairly tall in the back? Land Rover Discos are tall, had one as a rental some years ago when the 3 series wagon got bumped into....it traveled really well, but mileage was meh.

Second Gen Foresters are really tall in the back.  I should have mentioned that.

If we ever do go that route, it'd have to be a 95-97, they have the 4.5L so a bit more power.  Still garbage mileage and stupid high "residual value" or whatever you want to call it.  200k miles on a 17 year old truck for $9k?  No thanks.

I don't know if we can be friends anymore...

This search has been the least fun vehicle shopping experience I've ever had (and I've had plenty) so I think I'm suspending it indefinitely.  It's just been a PITA and nothing has really felt right.  We pulled one of the rear seats from the Element today and stuffed in the dogs and the baby.  Not ideal but it appears I can make it work with the cargo box on there.  I think we'll make the relatives rent full sized SUV's when they're in town.

Yet again, I'd like to keep the discussion going.  With a bigger budget (say $15k?), what would you get that satisfies the original requirements?  Ford Flex is on the list (still pushing it at that $), what else?  I figure we'll save the money we would have spent and we're almost done paying off the Element, so this will probably be an option sometime early next year.

Buick Enclave (or the Saturn Outlook or GMC Acadia), original Caddy SRX.

And I liked the Flex- I had a rental on some back roads in northern NM and it boogied decently (still a large vehicle, but drove smaller than it is. A little smaller, anyway).

We've tried it before, but it's pretty tight, the dogs are giant. On the plus side we'll probably be driving late so everyone will be asleep. After thinking about it, I'm pretty sure the rented minivan without the cargo box would be almost as tight, so fuck it, I'll give it a shot. If it doesn't work we'll just leave the dogs in Wyoming smile.

My wife has always wanted a pair of harlequin great danes.  Between the logistics and their life span it has never happened. Even our Dobie who was 31+ at the shoulder and 100+ pounds was small in comparison.  Newfs fall into this category as well, just too damn big.

Really big dogs are great, and limiting.

I don't see the Flex as big enough.  AWD Sienna is the logical choice.   Sprinter, pretty industrial, but certainly big enough, and maybe doable used.

A Vanagon Syncro would be great and impractical, and likely not as big as the Sienna.

Ford Transit Connect?  Awfully big inside (smallish outside, kinda like a clown car) and talking to a few owners, great fuel economy although somewhat down on power. It's essentially a mini version of the Sprinter, and a very standard European delivery van.

smile  Dude, i am serious, took a 3000 mile road trip to the west coast last summer and planning another thus summer because the Ody made it so pleasurable.  As a DD, it sucks, except when i had to get the piano, had to pick up the sedated 90lb greyhound at the vet, had to take the walk behing mower to get serviced, had to pick up the new BBQ and patio set with 6 chairs.  smile  hey, you can take for a spin before we tackle the Timing Belt onit, as it is due.  smile

Odyssey's are cavernous....and that V6 is sufficient enough to make it less painful to drive. 3rd row folds flat into the floor.

+1 on Saturn Outlook.  Orphan GM brand will push price down, but functionally equivalent to Acadia/enclave.  Probably would hit the $15K price point (probably easily)

Man, all the talk about Vanagons has me interested in them again.

Even though I'd really want a Westfalia Syncro, the interior on this one is swanky as fuck.

There's a company in CA that does camper conversions on Elements....pricey though.

I didn't think they did them on the newer body styles, that one seems to suggest otherwise though...

Just to make sure I'm understanding this correctly, the cargo area is L-shaped with this set up, right? This would make me stupendously nervous. The baby is completely exposed on the side to falling/flying dogs or gear in case of an accident. If everything was in the back and there was a heavy wire barrier there would at least be some level of protection.

Yes, L-shaped.  Her car seat has fairly large sides, so she's pretty protected from 3 sides.  The dogs are also down lying down when we're traveling, so they're a few feet below her.  I can understand a bit of worry, but I don't think it's really a big concern.

Re: F**K MINIVANS! I'm building a motovan!

While you're considering vehicles next year, keep in mind the Tribeca as well. I liked the interior design when they first came out (and still think the flying vagina has more character than the refresh, even if it isn't pretty) but can't speak for driving experience. But between the Outlook / Enclave / Acadia and SRX suggestions from earlier, you'll have quite the range of driving dynamics and interior packaging to consider.
