If you go for a GM B-body wagon, get the Buick Roadmaster with the ultracool Vista view window panel in the roof!

I am so sorry for you.  sad

Don't worry, it's a stage 1 turbo so it's actually pretty entertaining, especially in the snow. And I'm young, plenty of time to improve.

Regarding the gigantic wagon idea, I've toyed with the idea of buying Shane's a few time.

Big wagon =  banana

Also, not a minivan. You get to keep your man card.

I don't think he's looking to do an engine swap... still, good idea.

Astro Van with a cammed LS1 would be kind of fucking sweet.

Can't remember if Hyperboarder has mentioned how big his dogs are. They are pretty frikking big, as in close to huge. While I second the motion for a land yacht station wagon, his dogs would be cramped in one. So back to a minivan. LOL!!!

Fuck that shit. Get a horse trailer for the dogs, and tow it behind something less embarrassing than a minivan.

Re: F**K MINIVANS! I'm building a motovan!

Just got back from checking a few out and want to blow my fucking brains out.  I don't want to have to convince myself and my wife that it's a good idea, does anyone else have a good alternative?  Looking harder at the Roadmaster (wife's bitching about safety stuff), trying to figure out what else I should look at.  Any reasonably priced quad cabs trucks I can slap a topper on?

Oh.  Well that kinda makes things tougher.  We have two standard poodles.  A Dane and a Mastiff - yep they will take most of the hatch area.

Mazda 5?  Forget it.

AWD Sienna.

Re: F**K MINIVANS! I'm building a motovan!

Driving to dinner tonight I pointed out an LX450 to my wife and she was surprisingly on board.  Doesn't satisfy the low to ground, good mpg, or LATCH requirement, but they are solid rigs.  So I guess that's in the running now.

Re: F**K MINIVANS! I'm building a motovan!

For seats you can always do what I do. My car has 2 car seats in it and so does the wife's 4runner. The seats in the 4runner are better than the ones in mine, since they are in the 4runner most of the time. That way they are never moving around.

Re: F**K MINIVANS! I'm building a motovan!

Ugh, the more I look, the angrier I get.  I checked rental rates for the time we need it and that seems like the right choice right now, under $400 for the time we need it.  Apparently Budget/Avis is OK with dogs if we keep them clean enough, so I suppose we'll throw a few blankets in the back to keep the shedding to a minimum.

Regarding the ongoing need for a vehicle with the aforementioned characteristics (or at least some of them), I'd like to keep that discussion going.  Non-minivan would obviously be best, still (well) under $8k, and reliable.  I like the 80 Series TLC/LX450, but I don't like the stupid high costs for a 15 year old vehicle or the low-teens MPG's...

I say you just rent when you need one if this is only for trips.  Just to calculate conservatively, if your budget is $7,000 and it's $400/rental, that'll get you ~17 trips.  That's a little more than 3 trips per year, not counting insurance, maintenance, registration, etc..  If you factor those things in, it's probably more like 4 or 5 trips per year.

I say stick with renting. embeer

If a decent sized wagon won't work I think the rental is the best idea.

Re: F**K MINIVANS! I'm building a motovan!

I've been trying to justify a Roadmaster for years, in fact I'm talking with Shane in Denver for the 3rd time about his.  The issue is the back is just not tall enough, by his measurement it's 29" floor to ceiling.  My Outback is 31".  My great dane is ~36" at the shoulders.  Just won't work.  As of now I'm waffling on a 91 Landcruiser or an Astro, if neither of those show the promise I hope, I'm saying fuck it, banking the $ for the future, and renting for now.

Interesting.  I will have to measure the Passat.  Our larger dog is 29 at the shoulder and he fits head up in the Passat no problem.  He is at least 36" to the top of his head.
