My SKS converted to scout rifle surpasses my expectations, and can also be used as a club without fear of damage. The machining looks like it was done by a high school student in shop class, but it works reliably.

I just bought a Baikal IZH-18 20 gauge single shot for 1000 bucks like new condition. 27" barrel, removable choke. I bought it as a possible turkey gun for this fall and for rabbit and squirrel during deer season. Anyone shot this brand before? It seems to be better build than a H&R or a NEF single shot, and the mechanism is pretty cool too. Thinking about picking up another from the same guy for 80 that does not have a vent rib barrel and is modified choke only.

I have an old, crappy picture with the Monte Carlo stock and scout scope, but since then, I've cut off the lugs for the bayonet. I may take it out for a spin this weekend. If I do, I'll get some updated pictures.

OK, smartasses. Some pictures.
The Monte Carlo stock conversion and scout scope:
The bolt carrier. Note the quality of the machining.
The right side. This is the outside of the chamber, showing the gas tube release lever. Note the exceptionally fine finish of the rear outside of the barrel assembly.
As crude as the machine work is, I'll say that it does work. Accuracy is better than I expected, expecially considering the ballistics of the 7.62x39.
EDIT:
I wish the importer hadn't welded on the flash hider after removing the original (which is part of the grenade launcher setup). I'd like to get rid of the centering flange ahead of the front sight and perhaps ditch the flash hider completely. It isn't necessary for the configuration and the overall look would be cleaner. I'm not going to pay to have it cut off and the barrel recrowned though. This was intended to be an inexpensive project for shooting cheap ammo.

Mine's a Yugo SKS, and probably sat soaked in cosmoline for 40 years before being etched as Serbian and sold to Big 5 Sporting Goods. I'm not surprised it works. The simplicity of the design rather elegant. No gas impingement here. The workmanship is crude, but good enough. I was getting 20 round groups of about 5" at 100 yards with the iron sights.

I just bought 2 cheap-o shot guns I bought 2 shot guns for 250. a Baikal brake-open single with a fixed modified choke and a Remington 870 with a 21 inch barrel. both in 20 gauge.
I got two because I have a bachelor party this weekend and we needed more guns! yay guns.

As long as it doesn't contain anything about the "scary sound" racking a shotgun makes and scaring intruders away, ask away.

Ok here goes. I'm not a gun aficionado.
I will be buying 2 guns soon for home defense. First will be a shotgun and then a revolver later. I'm looking at getting a Mossberg Persuader w/ 18" barrel. It's this year's model and they had a new version replace it. Good deal at $260 I think. What do you think?
