I hate Harbor Freight. I bought a lightweight aluminum jack from them. Works like shit. Bought a torque wrench too, and got to test it for the first time tonight. Worse. Was changing my oil for the first time ever (on any car...yes, I know...) and apparently the torque wrench doesn't know what 33 ft lbs is (nor do I since I've never used one). Now either my drain plug bolt is stripped, or more likely, according to Gil, my oil pan threads are stripped. What do you guys recommend as my best course of action? Use Saab roadside assitance to tow my car there and have them see if it's the bolt or oil pan? I appreciate any and all advice/noob criticism/anything. Thanks a bajillion plus one.
Looks like I probably won't be coming to the NJ meet...Sorry

I've not changed the oil on the 92x myself.
If the plug is a harder metal than the oil pan (is it aluminum?) then you stripped the oil pan threads. Your only hope is to get the hole re-tapped somewhere and get a corresponding thread plug to put into the new hole.
Or order a new oil drain pan, I have a feeling that'd be really expensive

New oil pan is like 400 I think.
Why even use a torque wrench on an oilpan plug?
nOOb!

Cause I read the complete noob guide to doing oil changes, and they said to torque it to 33 ft lbs

And yes, the bolt is harder than the stamped metal oil pan.

did you read the directions on how to use the torque wrench???
I've bought one from harbor freight a while ago and it worked fine.
It clicks slightly when it reaches the correct torque....why the hell did you feel the need to tighten it like crazy?

Shit. People were playing music in the apartment nearby. I didn't think it was loud enough that I wouldn't hear the clicks though :-/
I was wondering as I was tightening it "jeez i didn't think it would be so tight" and just then, it just got really easy to turn. My tardy self knew right away what happened :-/

Man I would pay to see the expletives uttered at that point.

I love Harbor Freight..
I bought a lightweight aluminium jack from them...works great....Bought a torque wrench too...works great.....
Sounds like operator error to me...
Sorry to hear of your troubles....
A shop may be able to re-tap the pan and fix you up but if I were the shop I would worry about liability if the drain plug doesnt hold, and they are responsible for replacing your engine...
Cheers,

I say drop the pan, buy a gasket (or sealer or whatever for it), tap the thread again and clean out all the metal bits, put the pan back on.
Might want to check the OP date.

My oil plug was a little weird when I first got the car but it seems fine now. I've never actually torque'd my plug, I just make it tight, but I also put a crush washer on it too to make sure there are no leaks. Oil changes are a sinch. Royal Purple 5w30 ftw.
Edit: just realized this is an '06 thread, why are we digging up dinosaurs?

I have done more oil changes than I care to think about and never used a torque wrench.

I was new to the game, had never done a change before, and read a guide that specified 33 ft lbs. I wanted to be damn sure I did it right.
I did good.

Eh, it's okay. The twist-action isn't very good. Rotate it 5 degrees and my car is instantly on the ground. It's hard to lower the car slowly.
