Most likely a marketing ploy to get more visibility.  I like how it says another feature is the density which helps shifting, blah blah.  Why not just make a knob out of Tungsten...now we're talkin dense and relatively cheap.

They should throw in an old Geo or something, just so they can add "comes with free car!" to the auction big_smile

Re: Anyone want a $75,000.00 shift knob?

The best part about this gimmick is since they haven't done anything much to decorate the damn thing they can just melt it down later and re-sell it to a precious metals dealer if noone buys it.  I don't know what the balance is between materials cost and labor, but at that price, I'm betting it's mostly materials + insane markup.

As an aside, I once visited a factory that used small amounts of precious metals in their production process.  Well, they weren't super careful with their raw materials inventory and one day someone misplaced a small sheet of a valuable metal worth about $15,000 and they just couldn't find it anywhere.  Six months later they found out a plant repairman had found it laying around, thought it was a piece of a different, inexpensive metal, and had nailed it over a hole in the roof.   big_smile

Re: Anyone want a $75,000.00 shift knob?

Current price for a ONE OUNCE of platinum bar, using TODAY'S MARKET RATE, is $887 PER OUNCE.  99.9% pure.

How many ounces will it take to make this shift knob?  Surely NOT more than what, four or five ounces?  So that means the mark up is $70,000???

Good business, if you can find a buyer...

Re: Anyone want a $75,000.00 shift knob?

According to that description, it's 42.72 oz, so that's almost $38k worth of platinum.   Platinum is almost 8 times denser than aluminum so it takes alot more weight-wise.

Still quite a markup, especially considering there can't be a whole lot involved in making the knob...

Re: Anyone want a $75,000.00 shift knob?

Wow, almost three pounds of platinum.  Better have a really good insurance rider just for the shift knob.

And yes, the major portion of the knob is making the mold to pour the heated liquid platinum into.  Then finishing it and double checking the threading...

But still, that's one heck of a mark up.  But 100% markup is not that unusual in the 'upper crust' that this knob may (or may not) go to.

Making one out of an industrial diamond would be way cheaper.  Er, I think it would be...
