what are common problems for the 92x?

I was wondering what are some problems that often happen with the 92x? anything in particular that happens on all 92xs?

none biggrin

door/lock chirper
front rotors

If you dont mod it its a very reliable car
most of the issues you hear are from modded cars

Mine is modded stage 2 - 245+ hp at 65k miles and still running strong
Its really how you mod it with what parts that matters most.

Re: what are common problems for the 92x?

If you don't keep enough oil in it, the engine will go....  this seems to be the most common problem that happens to all of our cars (or the ones that people don't check their oil levels).  All kidding aside that is about it.

Don't beat the trans or you will be sorry..... um..... only problem I have had is my clutch squeaks.  Some complain they have too many rattles/sqeaks in their cars.

Re: what are common problems for the 92x?

+1 on keeping oil in the car.  its not that hard.  when you put gas in check the oil.  Some guys here have zero oil consumption but, they know this because they check the oil.

other than that, there is a fuel rail TSB you should read somewhere and thats all i got.  they are good subys.  GL with search.

Re: what are common problems for the 92x?

The only serious problem I had was that my rad cracked which I found out after that it's fairly common because the plastic rads are junk! Other than that (and the oil and sometimes tranny as already mentioned) there isn't much else. These are good cars compared to others in that if you treat it properly, it'll leave you problem free for a long time!

Re: what are common problems for the 92x?

Noise.

Seriously, a pretty reliable, trouble free car. Properly maintained, there really aren't any major, consistent problem areas.
Based upon past Subarus, frequently used switch gear may be problematic. The headlight switch doesn't look any different
since 1989 and it was a problem on the old family Legacy (too pricey to replace by the time it needed to be done, so, it was left
in the constant "on" position since the ignition switch defeats the light switch anyway when you turn the car off.

The paint quality is poor, compared to current state of the art, but the cars run fine. It chips very easily, and rusts quickly if not attended to almost immediately.

Re: what are common problems for the 92x?

For an 05 research imp,foz and legs MY02-05, for an 06 research 06+ imp,foz and legs. Boxers are pretty reliable if taken care of. The 5mt's are a weak point if pushed to hard power wise/ abuse. The interiors are know for NVH and rattles due to weight/ money savings. My ac/heat have worked great on all of my cars - 04 sti 60k, 05 aero 120k, 97 leggy 120k. Stereo's are on par with other comparable OEM's. Surfaces remain strong through much use/ abuse. The exterior's are known for rice paper paint on the suby's, I'm to new to the 92x to know for sure on this one. So guys chime in if this is true of saabaru paint.
The suspension and running gear are dependable per use/ abuse.
The only complaint I've heard common to all boxers is gasket leaks - head, valve cover, breather, etc. I think it is inherent to the design and layout of the boxer. My year leggy was known for head gasket leaks and a common replacement. All high mileage boxers develop valave cover/ breather gasket leaks. I think it's due to the tremendous amount of heat they are exposed to and the low torque put on the assembly hardware.
Sensors are very reliable. I know knocks getting replaced in the high miles is common. DBW's have been known to have gremlins in a minority. Sometimes it is due to a stop that fell off, is missing or a loose connection.
All in all they are very reliable machines if you take care of them and act responsibly.

Re: what are common problems for the 92x?

The hood ornament paint peels off.

The handle on the rear hatch can stick in the open position.

The chirper on the alarm can suddenly start to only work intermittently.

Noise? i thought the extra insulation kit was suppose to eliminate noise and rattle?
i'm still a newb so what is imp, foz and legs mean?
one problem I heard is that once you buy a 92x, you see them everywhere. jk

thanks everyone for the quick feedback. appreciate it.

Imp = Impreza, Foz = Forester, Legs = Legacy (I think).  My only complaint (aside from spun rod bearings) is a rear end whine at 60 mph.  Normal, but irritating.

Oh thank Alah, lol. I thought my diff was on it's way out. Does different (synthetic) gear oil reduce the noise or make it stop?

Re: what are common problems for the 92x?

Noise (mostly my doing, not really a complaint but the valvetrain noise on this engine is pretty loud IMHO)

Paint (it's a waste of time to care, it's that bad)

Timing belt? (had to replace mine at 67k, belt was fine, one of the three idlers was trashed)

Other than that I fucking love this car.

Re: what are common problems for the 92x?

I'd heard that the front OEM rotors used on the 05s were prone to warping. I talked to one guy who had two sets replaced under warranty by the time the car had 30K miles.

I've had baD luck with Impreza windshields as well: my 03 spidered with 187 miles on the odometer. Two weeks later and it happened again. Whether it's a weakness of the car or my misfortune I don't know.

I'll reiterate OIL. Use a good synthetic, change it often, and check it periodically. Fwiw, I use German Castrol and have zero consumption.

Re: what are common problems for the 92x?

blouch uses a 19t wheel, but i'm not going to take the time to or money to upgrade the inj or fp ATM.  just gonna get a good turbo put in there quick.  The P&P&C will done by a local so it will be a fast turn around.  Definately would get the 19t under different circumstances.

Nope. Just changed mine at 60K. It's just as whiny.  In many respects, seems about as refined as a plastic lined compact pickup truck...

Yeah, they fucked up a lot of what they could have done in turning a Suby into a Saab.  I'm a bit bored, it's fun, but I don't trust the engine since I'm already on my second.  I'll probably trade my wifes altima and give it to her since they're worth dick now.

All that being said, I still like the car.

Re: what are common problems for the 92x?

For the price differential they could've:

1 - spent a little time to figure out WHERE to put the sound deadening, then actually did it (it's a whole lot easier to install when the car is being assembled than aftermarket, and it wouldn't have taken much time to find a "prototype" to test their sound deading on."  banghead

2 - put REAL aluminium trim in the interior. Heck there's enough aftermaket vendors that make the stuff. Set up a contract with them.  banghead

3 - make the leather/HID package and cold package ('cuz REAL luxury cars have seat heaters... biggrin) standard.

4. - invest in a power seat w/memory option ('cuz REAL luxury car have seat memory) standard.

That would've at least made buyers think they were getting a SAAB for the $7K - $8K.

Stupid GM.  Lucky us  roxor
