Finally! Solid overall production figures for the 9-2x!

EDIT: as of August 2015, I have access to all US VIN numbers and no longer require additions to this thread. Any Canadians willing to cough up VINs are still welcome to do so.

I have been doing some serious digging on the Fuji Heavy Industries websites, both in English and Japanese. I have come across a "fact book" that outlines production figures and specifically calls out Saab numbers, as follows:
http://i934.photobucket.com/albums/ad184/krazykarguy/Saab9-2xproduction1.jpg

http://i934.photobucket.com/albums/ad184/krazykarguy/Saab9-2xproduction2.jpg
FHI's fiscal year ends on March 31st. Any cars produced before that day would end up being accounted for in the previous fiscal year.
02/04-03/04 = 2004 (MY 2005)
04/04-03/04 = 2005 (MY 2005)
04/05-03/06 = 2006 (MY 2006)
04/06-end = 2007 (MY 2006)

I have also taken the US production figures that Jason dug up and applied that trim/transmission % breakdown to Canadian cars.

Here's some analysis:
2005 (8,514 cars produced)
US
Aero 5MT     1,937    24.71%
Aero 4EAT    1,353    17.26%
Linear 5MT   1,911    24.38%
Linear 4EAT  2,638    33.65%
                  7,839     100%

2005
Canada (est.)
Aero 5MT     167    24.74%
Aero 4EAT    117    17.33%
Linear 5MT   163    24.15%
Linear 4EAT  227    33.63%
                  675     100%

2006 (1,832 cars produced)
US
Aero 5MT     235      16.17%
Aero 4EAT    103       7.09%
Linear 5MT   469      32.28%
Linear 4EAT  646      44.46%
                  1453     100%

2006
Canada (est.)
Linear 5MT   183      48.28%
Linear 4EAT  196      51.72%
                  379     100%

The US figures are pretty solid, and the Canada figures are based on the same breakdowns (+/- 1%).

Enjoy!

Re: Finally! Solid overall production figures for the 9-2x!

I am still going back and forth with some people at GM Canada to get actual figures.

Keep in mind that the Canada figures are the total # produced for a model year less the US production. The trim/transmission breakdowns are based on the same US breakdowns.

However, I'm pretty confident in these numbers.  big_smile

Re: Finally! Solid overall production figures for the 9-2x!

So the next logical step would be to figure out how many 9-2x's have been totaled, to determine the number remaining on the road, right?  That number would of course continue to go down as cars get old until there are only a handful left at which point they will of course be worth millions.

One question - it would seem you are using the fiscal year numbers in order to differentiate from cars sold as model year 2005 and model year 2006.  Do those dates (FY and MY) coincide?  For instance - at some point the aero came off the assembly line with a 2.0L engine (MY2005), and then they switched to the 2.5L engine (MY2006).  Does that transition point in car production typically coincide with the end of the fiscal year?

BTW, it would be really cool if it were possible to add color to the breakdown.  The number of red 2006 Aero MT's must be ridiculously low.

Re: Finally! Solid overall production figures for the 9-2x!

Currently on eBay, there is a company that seems to be parting out FOUR different 9-2x cars. They don't look destroyed, I assume that they are flood cars. I'd wager that there are less than 9,500 left today.

The assumption of model year and fiscal year coinciding are backed up by the US production figures that Jason provided. His figures were obtained through a VIN list provided to him from GM. The total numbers are so close to matching, that it's safe to assume that this is how it is.

The only real way to tell if this the case would be to know the VIN and production date of the last Aero for '05 and the VIN/production date of the first '06 Aero.

I have been working on a color/package breakdown, but my sample size is too small to come up with any solid generalizations - yet.

I can say, though, that in 2005 and 2006, Midnight Black Mica is by far the most common color. Lots of cars (supposedly including ALL Canada cars) have the cold weather package.

As far as rarity is concerned, Brilliant Red is not very common in either year. Nordic Grey (only offered on '06 2.5i's) also seems to be pretty rare (I only just saw my first Nordic Grey 9-2x this weekend - it had Quebec plates). The moonroof also is a pretty rare feature, but is more common on Linears/2.5i's.

So, if you're driving a Brilliant Red 2006 4EAT Canadian Aero, chances are that its one of only 6 or 7 cars. Option packages reduce this number as well. (the Aero was only offered in three colors in '06 - Red, Black, and Silver)

Re: Finally! Solid overall production figures for the 9-2x!

I'm just crazy, I guess.

I never really had a car that would be even considered remotely rare... When I found out that I was driving a pretty rare car, it kind of sparked my interest.

I also get a kick out of raw data, and being able to say (like they do at Barrett-Jackson) "this is one of only 2,400 cars..."

Re: Finally! Solid overall production figures for the 9-2x!

I really like being 1 of 117 in Canada

Aero 4EAT    117    17.33%

But this is likely low.  5MTs were less common in Canada - most Aeros were 4EAT from what I understand.

Still 1 of a few hundred max is pretty cool.  No wonder I see next to none.

Re: Finally! Solid overall production figures for the 9-2x!

arrow-up Like I said above, my trim/trans breakdowns are based on the known US breakdown. There is certainly some variance in the Canada figures. The overall production numbers, however, are pretty solid - your CDN '06 Aero is rare indeed, regardless of the transmission.

What's your source on more A/Ts vs. M/Ts in Canada?

Re: Finally! Solid overall production figures for the 9-2x!

I have 200 cars' colors tracked on the registry I'm maintaining...

52 are Midnight Black Mica, 48 are Arctic Silver.

I guess stating that Black is "by far the most common" is a little overzealous.

Re: Finally! Solid overall production figures for the 9-2x!

AWESOME!

It's weird to think that even though the 4EAT Linears were most commonly sold, they are probably least common here on the boards.  Makes sense though because we wouldn't be on here if we didn't like cars, and if you have a 4EAT Linear, you don't like cars.

Also, it comes out to about 10,346 cars and we have 3,418 members on the site, so basically 1 in 3 92x are on here.  (Yes, I know not everybody here has a 92x and some people sold them to other people on the forum, but still)
