Engine/turbo noises under heavy acceleration

Is it normal to hear some "noises" when hitting the turbo hard from a stop or low speed?  When I really gun it I sometimes hear a sort of cracking noise.  My brother claimed to hear 'ticking' when he was driving it.

Today I sort of heard a few snaps and pops and then a cracking sort of noise.  It's a bit hard to tell because of course the turbo gets loud and so does the overall noise in the car, but it definately sounds like coming from the engine area.

My car is an AT.

Just wondering if it's anything to be concerned about...

Re: Engine/turbo noises under heavy acceleration

Jeebus...snaps, pops, and a cracking noise?  I would say not good.  Does it only make sounds when you gun it, or does it do it at idle?  Can you maybe record it and post it up on youtube or something?  Does it always do it, or only some of the time?

Re: Engine/turbo noises under heavy acceleration

Only when I gun it, which I generally don't do very often.  Today I pulled out at a difficult corner and gunned it to stay ahead of a car.  Hard to say exactly what the sounds are as it all happens pretty fast but today the 'crack' was distinct.  I would say I've heard similar sounds 3-4 other times.  Nothing when going from 80-150 range with similar acceleration speed, just when going from 0-60.

At idle just normal subaru engine.

So, safe to say you hear nothing when doing similar acceleration?  Hmmm.

I'll see if I have something to record it with.

Re: Engine/turbo noises under heavy acceleration

No, definitely don't hear any snapping or cracking.  I don't know what it could be in the engine that would snap and crack multiple times and still allow the engine to be running fine.  Have you tried just pushing down on the hood and making the front end bounce a little?  I could see groans/creaking/popping happening on a repeated basis if it were the suspension, and it only did it when you get on the throttle (which would make the front end lift more).  Other than that, I have no idea what could be snapping or cracking.

Re: Engine/turbo noises under heavy acceleration

During acceleration or upon letting off throttle for a quick shift?

The BPV makes a crack/snap sound, but only upon letting off the throttle after hard acceleration.

Oh interesting, good call, to be honest that sounds about right, it may well not happen at all until I let off.  Hmmm.

Have you modified your car in any way?  Unless you removed the intake silencer, the BPV is very quiet.

No, no mods, it's totally stock.

I'm going to try and re-create it soon and see if I can pay more attention when doing it on purpose.

Isolate if you can hear it on the open road -- you shouldn't be able to unless the windows are up and you have very little road noise.

You can augment the BPV recirculation noise by finding a highway on ramp or street that has enclosure on both sides of the car. Like, tall concrete barriers or cinder block walls.

Re: Engine/turbo noises under heavy acceleration

turbo getting loud and stock don't make sense to me, if you are stock I would imagine the sound would be decently audible is there an RPM range it occurs at? can u say where its coming from? drivetrain? engine bay? turbo location? etc.

Re: Engine/turbo noises under heavy acceleration

I've never heard unexpected noises using the turbo at any sort of speed - really only from a stop or very slow.  It sounds like it's coming from the engine, can't really be more specific as it's only happened a few times and it happens very quick (maybe one or two pops, then a clap).  I would say it happens at around 4500 rpm - it's an auto so that's about as high as I go.  And it may well happen when i let off the throttle.  I tried to recreate today while running errands but I don't think I gunned it enough (traffic and whatnot).

Huh.  I still have a lot of undiagnosed 'rumble' as well which I feel is tire related (going to have them rotated soon) but I could be wrong - maybe there is some sort of belt issue or something (but a loud clap/slap/pop noise???).

Or maybe i ran over a pop can at the wrong moment twice and created a pattern in my head smile.  I'll have to recreate this...
