kap_x's official AR15 thread --Large pics P.4

This isn't exactly the prime time to be building a rifle, but there was a group-buy on Hughes Precision lowers, so I decided to order one.
Ordered a Rock River lower parts kit tonight, too.

So, it looks like I'm building another AR15 banana
Not sure what configuration I'm going to run yet, but that will most likely be dictated by price and availability at this point.
I am choosing to have the lower laser engraved at the factory, in case I want to build a short-barreled rifle, though.
It will take some time to build for those reasons, too.
I'm stoked just the same

Re: kap_x's official AR15 thread --Large pics P.4

I would love to build another one but I realized it would take months and months for me to get what I want. I have one ar now so I will just make that one as nice as I can.

Do you know what you want for an upper? or will you piece it all together on your own?

Re: kap_x's official AR15 thread --Large pics P.4

Depending on availability, I will most likely build the upper myself. I'll need to up my tooling, first.

Pyromancy5 wrote:

Right now, I am thinking about a 10.5" barrel.

The minimum length is 16" as aggie pointed out.
The M4 has a 14.5" barrel with A2 birdcage type flash suppressor. One can buy a 14.5" barrel, but they have to use a flash suppressor that is extended 0.2 inches and is pinned and welded/silver-soldered into place. This way it technically brings the barrel length to 16"
There are also 14.7" barrels, allowing the manufacturer to pin and weld a standard birdcage flash suppressor to total 16."

If you go through a number of loops and lots of ATF paperwork, you (depending on state laws) may be able to go shorter. I'm thinking of going this route again (hence why I already am having the info engraved)

I am probably going to end up putting way too much money into this rifle lol

He doesn't have running water or electricity, but boy, he sure knows how to make your gun shoot like an M4 Carbine.  I think it's like $250 + parts.

He also has a still and makes moonshine and is missing 10+ teeth. cool

This is one of the legal ways to do it. That little piece of metal (and M16 bolt carrier group, et. al) is worth approx. 10k-$20k

I won't go into details on how, but he is probably inducing slamfires. Not good

ETA: Full-auto is overrated anyway.

Great way to smooth out all those pesky twists in a barrell though smile
I just don't see the point in getting a sbr stamp when it would be so much better to spend that on a silencer for the rifle!

Why not get both big_smile

If I'm to get a suppressor, it will be 9x19mm for the MP5 and pistols.
Suppressing 5.56 lowers the amplitude into safer-hearing range, but that's about it, due to the nature of the high-velocity cartridge.

Re: kap_x's official AR15 thread --Large pics P.4

If I were to order a suppressor today, it would be the SWR Trident 9. It runs $600 tops. 3-lug mount is $125, and of course a $200 tax stamp.

5.56x45mm suppressors are ~$500-1000. Though if I were going to suppress a 5.56 rifle, I might just buy a 7.62 suppressor and use it on both. While not ass effective as a 5.56 suppressor, it is nearly as effective and will work on .308s, etc.

Of course this is the part where I chime in and say "nana-nana-booboo, you live in the Republik of IL." However, I'd like to think myself more mature than that, so

However, I live in Lake County where the rifle and the ammo I purchased are deemed legal.  I'm thinking about making a supressor with a friend for my AK.

Cook county is where you can't defend your home and where the criminals are empowered.  Not Lake.

I believe IL law dictates no NFA items, though. I'm not 100% sure.

ETA: Looked it up. No suppressors for you unless you a Class 2 SOT
