Sti Transmission mount

Just put this in today. The install went well, did it on ramps and used a floor jack to support the transmission.  Just taking off a bunch of easy to get at bolts, sliding the old tranny mount off, putting in the new one, and bolting it back up.  There is a good deal of difference in the amount of shifting or drivetrain-lash that happens with the new mount.  It is reduced a good deal.  Getting on or off the gas is smoother, more direct feeling.  The shifting process is a little smoother and more solid.  You feel more connected to the car.  There is a little more vibration around the pedal area that you might feel, and a little more deceleration/acceleration sound.  Overall, I like it so far.  Only cost me $57.
Next up, 20mm rear sway hopefully at the beginning of next week.

Re: Sti Transmission mount

I purchased it at Wicked Big Subaru Meet 05 in Massachusetts, but I found a website that I have ordered from  with a good price:

Re: Sti Transmission mount

Yeah, it's a popular item and a worthwhile mod in our opinion.

FYI & FWIW - we usually have the Subaru SPT/STi brand aftermarket hardened tranny mount - $73 at our shop vs. $65 at subaruwrxparts.com.  (We can't/don't try to compete with the deep discounters.  Hey, there's a place in this world for Wal-Mart and there's a place in this world for Macy's.  You gotta have both.) smile

Re: Sti Transmission mount

Has anyone installed the STI group-N engine mounts yet?  I had them in my 02 wrx and loved the diffrence and just wanted to see if anyone has done this with the saab.

Re: Sti Transmission mount

I was going to do the engine mounts, but after a day or two of driving with the STi tranny mount I not sure what I'm going to do.  The deceleration tranny whine is pretty loud now in 2nd gear, and actually has thrown me a little.  It is just really mechanical and kind of rough.  I'm not sure what to think of it.  The car actually feels good, though...  I don't think I'm use to the Subaru AWD transmission yet, both just its general characteristics and how to drive it smoothly (especially 1st to 2nd).  I've had only manual tranny cars for my 13 years of driving, so I don't know what my deal is...

I find 1-2 hard acceleration smoothness to be incredibly difficult to acheive so it's not just you.  Manual only for me also....going on 16 years of it.  The tranny mount sounds like it introduces more rawness to the driving experience...just what I like. smile

glad i am not the only one with this opinion, this is my first manual and I am totally comfortable driving it now (closing in on 2k) ... but that 1 - 2 shift bugs me a lot.  I have learned to deal with it under normal driving conditions, but I cant get a nice shift out of it under harder acceleration.  I believe it is because of the change of gear ratios ... all the other gears after 2 shift about 1k rpm lower than the gear before, but second shifts at slightly more than 1.5k rpm lower and so for a smooth shift one must wait for the engine to decellerate or use the clutch to match (stress on the tranny).  I have a friend whose father owns a subaru dealership who also works there and he told me that whenever they see a manual tranny that was fucked up it amost always happened on the 1-2 shift fyi.  Because of what he told me I am cautious on that shift.

Re: Sti Transmission mount

Don't know if I had posted this, but I threw in the Group N Tranny mount and it was probably my favorite mod. Not bad for $50.

Re: Sti Transmission mount

Agreed!  Probably the greatest value mod, other than the 20mm RSB (from what I hear).

The stock tranny mount is so spongy. I can't believe they use such garbage as stock parts.

Re: Sti Transmission mount

It's a Saab, it's about comfort.  I think the Saab one might be softer than the Subaru one, but I'm not positive.  Just don't do solid engine mounts, I have a friend who did, it's a bit overkill.

Nah, it's a subaru part. The new mount will increase confidence while shifting during WOT.

I agree, the Group N one is plenty stiff.
