No posts in almost 3 years? How about a rallycross video?

My fixer-upper 05 9-2x at Wilson County Fairgrounds, NC today.  Third event in this car after taking several years off of the sport.  What a great site!  Enjoy wink

In-car of my 6th and fastest run.  Trying out a new GoPro Hero 9 on a headrest mount, I'm impressed:

That was great! Looks like a good time.  I can’t even count how many cones I would have collected doing that.

Awesome! Looks fun! Not sure I liked the camera setting where it pretty much stayed fixated on the same direction even with the car turning.

Yeah I was not sure if I like it either, but to be honest, the more I watch that video the more I like it.

I'm doing an autocross in a few weeks (in an M3, not the Saabaru) and I think I'm going to try back-to-back with it on, off, and I think there is an intermediate setting.  At the very least it's pretty cool tech to play with.

For sure! It was different and cool in its own way too. Just gives you less of "in car" feel.

So...we want to know how that time was compared to other vehicles.  How would you rate the  92x's performance?  What parts did it excel in, and what are it's shortcomings for such a track?

Ha!  Great question.  Let me start with a primer applicable to most amateur motorsports:

60% driver
20% tires
20% car

Plus or minus on each depending on type of event, competition level, etc.  In a nutshell, a stock 9-2X (mine is stock except for exhaust and tune) or a WRX gets someone to, say, 75% of the "car" category.  But a fast driver can wheel a much slower car around quicker than a slow driver in the best machine.  And the wrong tires can set you back big time too.

So in a word, the 9-2X is great.  But, it's heavy in stock trim, doesn't have enough spring or shock, and could probably benefit from some additional lockup in the diffs.

I "lost" in 2nd place out of ~20 cars to an old friend who does a bunch of stage rallying in his stripped and purpose built 2.5l RS on real gravel rally tires.  I was in my heavy wagon with a bike rack on free winter tires.  And I did not lose by much.  Plus he's super talented, so no complaints.

As for times, at the last event where my near-pro rally friend did not show up, I nabbed overall fastest by 10+ seconds (at rally-x we add all runs together for total score, different than auto-x):
https://thscc.com/rallycross/events/202 … 8_fin.html

Was proud of that result! smile

TLDR - it's a super fun platform (just like a WRX) that can easily win at most local events with the right driver and decent tires.

I appreciate all the info.  It sounds fun (and challenging), and probably a better test of the driver than blowing past grandma at the last green light.

Got the M3 A-X video.  I did not have a chance to test on vs off and just left it on the whole time (I got busy since I brought 2 cars and had 4 people driving!)  but I decided that I like the "Boost" setting and I'm going to keep it on smile

Here is my M3 at an autocross last weekend with Boost ON:
https://youtu.be/MtzT-TsTe4w

Notice how the GoPro adjusts the panning to keep the slaloms centered in the video at around 0:58.  I think that it makes for a pretty dynamic and interesting video versus the camera scene slewing around all the time.

Very cool! Why was that run a lot more fun than the day before though?
