Heated Seat not working, but driver side only?

So it's getting a little chilly out so I try my heated seats & the drivers side is not working.  I checked the passenger side & this one is fine.  Rules out fuse issue, I checked it all the same, #23 is ok.  I checked the connection under the seat & also at the switch, both are attached correctly.  No sign of fried wiring also.  What else should I check?

I printed off the Subaru wiring diagram pdf for the heated seats, but I confess to being over my head.  Doesn't appear to be a separate ground wire for each seat.  Only thing I know I should check is to switch the two heater switch connections at the console.  If the driver side seat works & the passenger side doesn't, then I have a faulty switch.  If if stays the same, then the switch is ruled out.  Subaru made this check impossible though as the connections are slightly different & only work one way.

Anyone have any suggestions?  For all I know the original owner dumped a cup of coffee on his lap & fried the seat element, but I'm hoping this wasn't the case as the seats are leather and should provide some protection for this.

Any suggestions?

PS.  Where is relay block B225?  Is this the unit behind the coin change box?  Wiring diagram references a Rear 12V accessory relay, but the SAAB doesn't have this, but is there a relay I should check?

Re: Heated Seat not working, but driver side only?

My seats aren't working right either.  I think its my elements.  The butt part of my driverr side gets warm but only the back does on the passanger side.  I think the previous owner just left the heaters on non stop and killed the elements.

Swap the heating element to the other side.  If it works there, it's the heating element.  If not, it's the switch.

Re: Heated Seat not working, but driver side only?

Range Rovers have a problem where the wires that connect the butt heater to the back heater break from lots of use of the driver's seat.  That causes the whole thing to fail.  People pull off the covers and connect some wire back between the seats and backs and this resolves the problem.  May not be the same issue here, but worth a look.

This weekend I'm going to check the voltage at the plugs that are under the seat for the passenger (good) side & then the drivers (bad) side.  If I'm getting the same for each then the wiring up to the elements are ok & the element is dead.

Has anyone ever swapped over or replaced a heating element?

Does anyone have a procedure for this?  I think there is an exploded view of the seats in the Subaru service manual...

arrow-up  Don't just check the voltage to the elements, but also measure the resistance of the elements and compare.  If the driver side reads as an open circuit, there's just a break that can most likely be repaired.

Re: Heated Seat not working, but driver side only?

Unplug both seats... you have a good working one to compare..

measure OHMS at the plug and see what the level is for the good seat.. Then compare it to the Drivers seat.

If the drivers seat has OL then you Coil is shot, IF they measure the same then you have a problem elsewhere.

Could be the thermostat in the circuit..

Re: Heated Seat not working, but driver side only?

I know this is an old thread, but it is right up my alley (sort of). I am have the exact same problem! drivers side doesn't work but pass side does. I know for a fact that th drivers side DID work, because I remember using it when I first got the car. (I never had heated seats before... banana). Did anyone ever find a solution/fix??

Re: Heated Seat not working, but driver side only?

Since the driver's seat gets used the most, the likelyhood of broken wires in the heating element is much higher. Usually found by removing the seat cover and finding the burned spot in the heating element.  You can bridge the burnt out spot usually with solder and wire.

arrow-up  I never thought it'd matter with cloth seats (it DOES make a difference with leather) but it turns out I really like them.

They actually heat up real nice (when it worked). I just want to make sure everything is working for the car. It just kicked over 100K 2 dasys ago.

Re: Heated Seat not working, but driver side only?

I know this is an old thread but I'm looking for the relay/fuse locations for the heated front seats.  Both seats don't work , buttons don't light up anymore either.  I barely use the heated seat option but I want to resolve the issue.   I have the leather interior but I'm sure that doesn't make a difference as far as the location of relay/fuse.
