Re: My project Saabaru

Thank you gentlemen, the car is now my daily driver. It is 100% rust free. Sadly, it’s about to see its first winter season use. I plan on applying LPS3 rust inhibitor very thoroughly before then. It has just over 200,000 miles on the body, it has been hit front and rear before my ownership. I don’t think it’s a good example for preserving, therefore I’m going to enjoy driving it all year round. Ironically, it drives like a new car. I’m almost 56 years old, I can probably get a few years out of it before the car is destroyed by road salt. I’ll do my best to prolong its life, and mine, we shall see who last longer, the car or I. I’d like to be the last member standing here.

Yes drewsro, I normally hit the trails around Smithville lake or walnut park near Liberty. I have a house in Excelsior Springs, my son lives in Kearney. We are just north of Kansas City Missouri. My house is a few miles from famous Jesse James the outlaw’s farmhouse, everything is named Jesse James in the area, school, road, etc. I ride my road bike pass the historical farmhouse, very hilly area, beautiful. We love the area.

Re: My project Saabaru

Good luck holding back the elements and preventing rust.  At least you know the areas to watch and have the expertise to protect and deal with it.

One of the few advantages of the desert is not having to deal with that as long as we don't take them up to Flagstaff in the winter.  Other than the sun/heat damage to paint and plastics the biggest thing to worry about here is the occasional flash flooding.

I used to ride the Katy trail when I lived is St. Louis and never did more than out-and-backs for day rides, but see that it's now extends across Missouri and there's an extension at Windsor toward Lee's Summit.  I'm sure you're aware of them and I'm curious if you had a chance to check them out.

I'd like to get back there some day and ride the rails trail.  You and I are close in age, so clock's ticking LOL and I need to figure it out before it's not an option.

Re: My project Saabaru

Rich,
Glad to hear I’m not the only old guy here.
I’m determined to make my Aero last as long as possible.
I’ve actually been to Arizona to mountain bike ride a few times. I raced at the Cactus cup 2 times, for fun. I’ve ridden mountain bikes 30+ years, been all over the country and Canada eh!

I’m familiar with Katy trail, never been there but my son and his mom have. Nowadays I’m always too freaking busy and in a hurry. I try to sneak out a ride every chance I get. It’s unfortunate that my ability to travel to bicycle ride ended, I hope to get a few years after retirement so I can resume bicycle riding travel. I want to ride across the country at some point.

Re: My project Saabaru

I have the same plans for the two we currently have, but our teen is driving the automatic, so we‘ll see how much of it survives.  If nothing else I’m looking at it as a parts donor to keep mine going.

I haven’t ridden much since moving out here, but did quite a bit before then (fire roads, moderate trails and tarmac mostly).  We tried for a few years here, but it’s just not the climate for me.  Once we can move I hope to pick it up again.  As much as I would enjoy riding across the country, it’s probably too ambitious for serious consideration now.  Although it’s not complete yet, this is the route I like: https://www.railstotrails.org/greatamer … ail/route/

Wow, that’s awesome, thanks Rich, going to keep an eye on that, for when it’s time to make my dream reality.

Re: My project Saabaru

Next step is to try an aftermarket td04HL 19T and dark blue STi fuel injectors with a new tune.

Re: My project Saabaru

Got too busy to install the new turbo and injectors. Took the car to one of the local Subaru and Evo tuner shops on Long Island, MR Performance in Mineola NY. Had a few other things installed,  new E type oem recirculating valve, new oem clutch slave cylinder and master cylinder, new alternator wire plug and a 93oct tune. They must have a very optimistic Dyno, can’t wait to see the graph. I was told the car laid 313whp and 293 ftp, unbelievable really for a modified big td04HL 19T, STi dark blue injectors, cobb 3 port boost controller, perrin turbo inlet, STi ver 7 intake manifold and intercooler, cobb down pipe, Stromung catback, STi oem up pipe, Walbro fuel pump, Cobb afta maf, Grimmspeed crank pulley, NGK iridium one step cold spark plugs on an avcs enabled JDM ej205 motor. Haven’t driven the car yet, have to find the time to go pick up and take it for a spin. Curious to log it and do a virtual dyno pull.

Dyno tune session completed, the little Arashi TD04HL 19T 6+6 is fucking awesome. It spins faster than the stock TD04L everywhere all the way from way low, absolutely no lag. Don’t let the dyno graph fool you, it is super responsive down in the low rpm range but it pulls very strong all the way to 7000rpm, I’m very pleased.

Thank you sir.
It is my favorite turbo setup so far, the more I drive the car the more I love it.
I think the dyno numbers are extremely optimistic, the modified TD04HL is almost a VF48 spec wise but only 6cm. It is the largest form of TD04, and the reason I wanted to try it. I don’t think it can make 325whp and 293fpt. I took my bugeye out for a spin for comparison, that car has a vf48, granted that has an ej207 but the JDM EJ205 with avcs is very similar to the ej207.  I think the VF48 crushes the modified TD04HL.

Recently discovered if you play around with the romraider virtual dyno you'll see there's a lot of "tuning" just for making a dyno plot itself. Gear ratio, car weight, tire size, atmospheric conditions, and the way a curve is fit to the data...so you can get all manner of different numbers. All you need to do is log RPM, throttle position, and time for a pull, import the data and play around a bit.
But also who cares, if the car feels good that's what matters.  driving

I noticed the virtual dyno on RomRaider logger, maybe I’ll play with it and see what that looks like. Actually took the car out last night and did a log run just to make sure everything looks good. It cut fuel in 4th gear at 6000rpm, twice. Have to talk to the shop and see about bringing it back to correct the tune. The dyno numbers are not important to me, I just want the setup to be calibrated as good as possible and safe. It does run strong in 3rd and 4th gear, a modified TD04HL is a lot of fun.
