05 92x HID Ballast HELP

Hey guys, my ballast blew on my car driver side sad . I  did some troubleshooting and swapped over the ballast from the other headlight and it worked fine. Ive tried a few places to find a replacement but have come up with no luck. I called my saab dealer and he said that no one can order parts for about a week or so because saab is going through some stuff.  Is there any place you guys know that i could either get oem or something close to get this running again? Any help would be awesome. Thank you

I'm in the exact same boat - where do I get a ballast?  What Subaru part would work?

IIRC, you can use an STi ballast.

Re: 05 92x HID Ballast HELP

You should be able to find one on eBay for relatively cheap.  I would check the ignitor first though.  The Ballast, from what I've read, doesn't seem to go bad very often.  Just for the record, the ballast in the 9-2x is the same as the ballast that's used in earlier Nissan Maximas.

For mor einformation on this, search through my started threads.  I had one started about three months ago for the same issues.  There were a lot of really helpful people on that thread.

Mine was damaged due to water and eventually, everything dried out and it's working again.  Turned out that my cap was on crooked and it was allowing all sorts of water to get in to the lighting unit.

Good luck!

Re: 05 92x HID Ballast HELP

Here's what the ballast looks like for reference in case it is in fact the ballast that's bad.

Re: 05 92x HID Ballast HELP

I replaced both ballasts today with Matsushita Gen V.  The driver-side light, which was working OK, is brighter now with the new ballast.  The kit came with extra wires which I didn't need.  I also replaced both bulbs out of principle.

Yes, you have to tear the car this far apart to get to the ballast.

Re: 05 92x HID Ballast HELP

Bump.  My headlights have been great, but one of them had some moisture in it after sitting out in the rain all day.  It wouldn't light up, so I replaced the bulb, and it still won't light up.

According to this, I need to:

check the output (of the ballast) and see it matches what the bulb needs to fire up.

To make sure I've got the right names for things, the ignitor is the small thing on the left, and the ballast is the big thing on the right, right?

According to this thread, it looks like the way to test everything is to pull it all apart and swap them.  Bummer.

Any other input/pro tips on what to do here?

Re: 05 92x HID Ballast HELP

I put a LOT of water in my passenger side light this past summer when I left the cap off the back and then went through the carwash. I ended up with about 1/2" of water in there as seen from the outside in the lens.

I tried vacuuming out the water and then drying it with a hairdryer, but it just wasn't getting me anywhere so I ended up taking the whole thing out, taking the ballast off, and baking the whole light assembly as per the standard Koji method. It worked like a charm. I haven't had any issues since.

Kornfeld,
Yes it will reseal the light. I have some left over from modifying my 4runner to HID Projectors. If I lived by you I would give it to you. It stretches pretty far, and you do not need all that is in the roll. Go to a auto glass shop and see if they can sell you a little bit.

Are you saying the same ballast began working again after disassembly and simply drying out, or that you replaced it? I've read in multiple places that they can start working again after drying out.

Re: 05 92x HID Ballast HELP

Also: did you just bake the light and let cool, or did you fully open it up and replace the sealant? I was wondering if the old sealant will reflow if baked.

Re: 05 92x HID Ballast HELP

Yes, the original ballast that had lots of water in it (I could hear it sloshing when I shook it) has worked perfectly since I baked it in the oven to dry it out. They seem to be pretty robust units.

The sealant will reflow when baked. I didn't use any new sealant when I did my original Koji mod, nor when I cooked the headlight after my idiot mistake. When you get it up to ~215F, the sealant is very gooey. It's not chemically setting or anything like an epoxy - it'll get tacky whenever it gets hot enough.

Awesome.  Did you pry the headlight assembly open and put it  back together, or just bake and let cool, with no prying open?

Re: 05 92x HID Ballast HELP

I pulled it open and put it back. I would have only baked the ballast alone, but there was a water line residue left on the inside of the lens that I would have gone insane looking at if I hadn't cleaned it so I took it off to clean it.

Thanks for the info.  up Mine are still clean inside, so I might try just baking and letting cool.

Re: 05 92x HID Ballast HELP

embeer I'd recommend still removing the ballast from the headlight and baking that separately rather than baking the full assembly. It'll help the water to evaporate more easily, and you'll be able to shake it independently to see if it's fully cleared (you don't hear any water in there).

Re: 05 92x HID Ballast HELP

Absolutely.  I might even have the right security bit to pull the panel off the ballast and directly air it out.  And stick my tongue on the wiring. smile

After going through this thread multiple times, I somehow always missed this post.  Thanks for the input. up
