Clutch Master/Slave Cylinders

Wife's  92x has been leaking clutch fluid.  Twice in the last month the reservoir was almost empty.  A quick look did not reveal where exactly the leak was coming from.

Master cylinder - original
Slave cylinder - original but rebuilt once
Hose - Goodridge Stainless Steel Clutch Line - replaced at time of slave rebuild.

I think I am just going to replace all three and be done with this job for the foreseeable future (and probably the life of the car.)

$212.10 shipped from Heuberger Subaru Parts gets me all new Subaru OEM parts.

Wish me luck.

Re: Clutch Master/Slave Cylinders

I would think that the clutch line is not suspect, unless there is a leak at one of the fittings.

A master cylinder leak would likely be leaking INSIDE the car, check for wet spots near the top of the clutch pedal arm.

A leak at the slave cylinder will be somewhat more difficult to spot, as the slave is underneath the intercooler. You may have some drips on the transmission case or at the bottom of the engine near the bell housing.

A master cylinder leak would likely be leaking INSIDE the car, check for wet spots near the top of the clutch pedal arm.  After taking a closer look, I do not believe the leak is at the master cylinder.  There is no leak inside the car at the top of the clutch pedal arm.

A leak at the slave cylinder will be somewhat more difficult to spot, as the slave is underneath the intercooler. You may have some drips on the transmission case or at the bottom of the engine near the bell housing.  There appears to be fresh fluid on the outside of the slave cylinder.  The black rubber boot is wet.

Thanks for the info.

I think I'm going to start by replacing the slave cylinder and go from there.  I say "I think" because my wife wants all three parts replaced since it's relatively expensive to do so.  Found all three for $203.xx shipped.

Re: Clutch Master/Slave Cylinders

Replacing ONLY the slave cylinder is a valid way to go, and easier to bleed after replacement. Don't be surprised if the master cylinder goes out shortly thereafter, however.

If you want to bleed the system only once, do both. Just know that the master cylinder should be bench bled before installing (the slave doesn't need this). Keep the hose/line if not leaking.

Both it is then.  Never knew about bench bleeding the master cylinder.  Nice tip.

I have never replaced master or slave cylinders before so your advice has been very helpful.  The earlier slave rebuild & goodridge line install was done when the shop put in the JDM engine & clutch several years ago.

Side note:  I have to do clutch slave rebuilds on two of my motorcycles.  Both of them decided to crap out at the same time.  1985 Honda CB650 Nighthawk & 1984 Vf1100S Sabre.
