How wide can I go on rims and tires?

I need new tires on the 05 aero, but while im at it id like to upgrade to a 17 inch rim  as well, and go wider. I believe the factory rim is 6.5 wide? So im wondering, how wide of a rim can I fit to give it a snug wide look while maintaining proper tread wear? and what size tire would need to fit that rim? I was thinking an 8 inch wide rim. Any suggestions? (I'm bad with tire size calculations)

Re: How wide can I go on rims and tires?

On factory struts and lowered on pink wagon springs I'm running 18x8.5 48+ offset with 3mm spacers front and rear, meaning 45+ offset . Factory alignment specs at the rear with fender roll. At the front end I run -1.5* camber, 0 toe. Tires are 245/40/18 and I do have extended lugs due to the use of the 3mm spacers. On my other aero I run factory struts and pink wagon springs, 17x8 48+ 235/45/17 tires, -1.25* 0 toe front alignment, factory rear alignment specs, rolled rear fenders. You can run a 9" wide wheel using coilover struts, fender rolling and proper alignment setup, front tires will rub heavily while turning. My 235 tires do not rub while turning lock to lock, my 245 tires do rub while turning lock to lock.

Re: How wide can I go on rims and tires?

I was able to fit 245/40/17 on my car lowered on fortune 510s. Mounted on CE28n +38 8". Going to move to 235/40/17 on RE30 +43 8.5" rims this year. Both clear brembos (or wilwoods in my case).

-3.2 front camber
+5.2 front caster
-2.5 rear camber
0 toe

required fender rolling all around, maybe if I wasn't lowered you could sneak by with this setup.

Re: How wide can I go on rims and tires?

Forgot to mention my car is factory, no changes to the suspension. Im probably keeping it that way. Just looking to upgrade the rims and tires so I guess im just wondering what would work with a factory setup. Looking to get 17x8's, if that will work without rubbing etc. Do I need a specific offset for that?

Re: How wide can I go on rims and tires?

Im going to buy the rims used, so I guess i just need to know the exact specs so I can find out if whichever rims i find meet those specs instead of hoping for the best. Possibly going with rims off a newer WRX if that happens to be what im looking for size-wise

If you search the site, you will find your answers.   This topic has been discussed in excruciating detail in past years, and many, if not most, of the real experts have moved on, but their knowledge resides in the archives of the site.

Re: How wide can I go on rims and tires?

my buddy has a set of 225/50r17s for me, so I want to pick up a set of WRX rims which are 17x8s. Just curious how that would for on a factory setup (no lowering etc, factory suspension). Those tires are 8.5 wide.

You have a WRX wagon, it's all the same challenges.

17x8 will fit it depends on the offset. I have 2011 WRX wheels with 235/45/17 and they are paper thin close to touching the rear struts, closer than I would like.  I think those are 48mm offset.

I believe 2011-2014 wrx rims are +53 offset. Thats what im looking to buy, if these tires will fit on this car that is.

Re: How wide can I go on rims and tires?

look for 48+ offset on a 17x8 wheel, it is the most centered offset between the rear struts and fenders.

Re: How wide can I go on rims and tires?

Do you mean +48? Or anything higher than 48?

You're probably right, the higher offset makes them a very tight fit with a 235 tire. Even that tire is too narrow for an 8" wheel IMO, but they do look good on the car. A 3mm spacer would fit them nicely but that needs longer studs, or a different 8" wheel with a 48mm offset.

Re: How wide can I go on rims and tires?

+48 on a 17x8 wheel is the sweet spot on a 235/45/17
