'06 9-2x 2.5i linear, manual, $1700, 180,000 mi.

Hi all,

First post here and new to the car scene in general so thanks in advance.

Looking at picking up an 06 manual 2.5i linear for $1700 with 180,000 miles for sale near me.

I've been looking for an obscure, fun, reliable, and capable daily, and this one feels right but I wanted to ask the experts first.

Seller notes an oil leak and check engine light is on with some mention of head gaskets but it's vague.

I'm also looking to get into some light modding and understand these are compatible with many WRX parts.

Overall it seems like a good deal to me but I'm far from knowledgeable on this subject.

Thanks again,

JxWHEEL

Biggest issue with these cars is the condition of the rear shock towers.  Very bad rust problems, and very difficult to diagnose.  Search this site for some really scary photos (and some guidance for repairs).  If not a dry climate car, they are likely in very bad shape

Motor of this one sounds suspect as well.  Head gaskets are a known weak point.  And this engine likes to throw rods if the oil isn't maintained diligently.  Worst case, you need a new short block, or perhaps a swap for a different motor (don't know how "light" "light modding" is)

Yes a lot of the mechanicals are compatible with the same year WRX.  But not all, especially chassis and  the front and rear structure.  And Saab specific parts for the most part are NLA, so you have to find salvage parts for things like bumper covers and head/tail lights (though folks on here part out cars, and also sell parts from time to time).

Other, more experienced folks will likely chime in at some point.  But those two items would have me running away.

180k motor with oil leak, CEL, and possible head gasket leak... sounds like that motor is on it's last leg. I would not consider an engine swap light modding.

Also, swapping Linear (NA) to Aero/WRX (turbo) swap requires more than just changing the motor - you will need to change crossmember, ECU, exhaust bits, pedals (if using cable throttle), fuel pump, and... can't remember the rest.
