Re: Killer Air Bags!!!!!! 2005 9-2x!

^^^

From NHTSA:

These vehicles had their passenger frontal air bag inflators previously replaced under a prior recall using inflators of the same design. The inflators may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to high absolute humidity, temperature and temperature cycling.

So the replacements had the same flaws as the original?

Yes, at the beginning they were replacing with the same part, logic being they weren't 10+ years old and already corroded. They added a desiccant to the replacements as well.

Re: Killer Air Bags!!!!!! 2005 9-2x!

I got a notice that I was actually supposed to take my car to a local Subaru dealership. Unfortunately I threw the letter away by mistake.

Did anyone else get this notice?

Re: Killer Air Bags!!!!!! 2005 9-2x!

I've had notices to go to the local Chevy/GM dealer and also one that offered to have the repair tech come to me.

Chevy is/was offering $50 gift cards to get you to complete the recalls, I collected one last fall. My Aero needs the passenger airbag replaced for the second time, curious it if is eligible for the incentive.

Re: Killer Air Bags!!!!!! 2005 9-2x!

Thanks for the replies. I've already been through one replacement when I was in Oregon. The difference in Oregon was that I had Saab dealerships nearby.

I have been aware of the nhtsa site, but the new / replacement (again) notice I got in the mail specifically directed me to a Subaru dealership which struck me odd, but was welcome because I live 10 miles from a Subaru dealership now and the nearest Saab dealership is multiple states away.

Thus my question, did anyone specifically get sent something that told them to go to a Subaru dealership with their 92X ? I grow weary of explaining to parts managers and service managers over and over how this car is not a Saab and when they lookup the VIN I fully expect them to reject my request.

Re: Killer Air Bags!!!!!! 2005 9-2x!

Follow up. Did some cleaning. I should have known better, I'm a pack rat and rarely throw things away. Here is the mail I got regarding this topic.

Then to further confuse things, when I go online to check the status, I see this:

(As you can see vehicle make is listed as Subaru)
This was back when I did my initial (first go) at getting my airbag replaced the first time. At least now that I have this letter I can proceed to getting things rolling with the local Subaru dealers in a more easy fashion hopefully.

Re: Killer Air Bags!!!!!! 2005 9-2x!

My local Subaru dealer where I buy plenty of spare parts would not do the recall. I had to take my car to a Buick dealership Saab sent me to.

I got that same notice. I called them and they gave me an email address to send in my shop receipt from getting the airbag as proof that it was completed.

Did both of you have to do the airbag recall twice? I just looked back and found that it was January 2016 when I had mine done. I'm seeing this when I check my VIN.

Re: Killer Air Bags!!!!!! 2005 9-2x!

If the first repair was done early on, the bag needs to be replaced again. The first repairs were with like parts, so at least they weren't rusty but were still going to fail again eventually. Mine is going in for the second repair this week, so far it's just the passenger side.

Re: Killer Air Bags!!!!!! 2005 9-2x!

NHTSA shows the same thing for my car. I had my airbag recall done in March of 2017. So...I guess I'll be getting a letter at some point? I haven't received anything indicating I need to do it again yet.

I don't think I got a letter, if it's showing up as needing service call your local facility and get it done.

Re: Killer Air Bags!!!!!! 2005 9-2x!

The VIN from my old car is now coming up for the recall. I had the passenger side airbag inflator module replaced once already.

This airbag thing is insane.

Re: Killer Air Bags!!!!!! 2005 9-2x!

I got my second airbag recall done about a month ago at Popular Mechanix in San Francisco. They normally work on Volvos and Saabs and I have to say that they did an amazing job and even provided me with a free loaner car (older XC70 cross country). They also took care of the control arm recall and gave me brand new control arms. (When I got the first airbag replaced B&B basically just looked at the control arms and didn't do anything.)

Re: Killer Air Bags!!!!!! 2005 9-2x!

I did the repair and sent in the $50 rebate card. One week after the repair my car was t-boned and totalled. The only small airbag puffed in my car was the tiny one from my driver's seat.
I did receive the $50 rebate card in the mail, after my car was totalled.
