Rear Hatch Lock/Latch Mechanism stuck

Hi,

Over the freezing winter, I heard the latch make a noise when I tried to open it and the handle became disengaged. I couldn't open the hatch. AAA car repair facility says spring released and cable is stretched. Found part for $220.00 and wants to 1.5 hours to install - another $150.00. $370.00 total.  Seems like alot.  I'd like to find the part and try to install it myself.

Any help is appreciated.

Re: Rear Hatch Lock/Latch Mechanism stuck

Welcome to the forum, this is an extremely common issue.  After a brief search, here's a short list of the threads that came up:

https://saab92x.com/viewtopic.php?id=944
https://saab92x.com/viewtopic.php?id=28449
https://saab92x.com/viewtopic.php?id=24350

https://saab92x.com/viewtopic.php?id=20369

The most likely solution for you is this:

Scargo wrote:

Step 1: Unlock car.

Step 2: Go to hatch, push release lever the opposite direction needed to release the hatch (i.e. towards the front of the car). You are trying to restore the lever to it's "rest" position, as the spring apparently has not.

Step 3: Lock the car.

Step 4: Unlock car.

Step 5: Release the hatch lever, open hatch.

Step 6: Open hatch interior cover and lube the handle or you will have this happen again.

thank you so much.... I was lost on what to do and 5 min after reading you post it is fixed!  I was stressed.

I wasn't too sure what to lube and don't really care so I lubed everything that could be suspect in there.

As for the dbag that never thanked you, don't come back! roll

Re: Rear Hatch Lock/Latch Mechanism stuck

FYI, I struggled with this problem for several years - kept lubricating the handle and the mechanism, and it kept happening over and over again. Mechanics kept lubricating it too, and it still kept happening. (Can't count how many times I had to follow step 1 - 6, almost every day). Finally ordered a new release lever (not the latch) and it was the best $100 I spent. All fixed.

Re: Rear Hatch Lock/Latch Mechanism stuck

Mine does this. If you pull the hatch release when the car is locked, stuck! I fold the back seat down and climb in there. Pop the plastic square cover off on the interior behind the latch, then poke the latch until it moves and problem solved. No amount of lubrication is going to fix the latch, it needs to be replaced, or I need to stop trying to open my locked hatch.

Re: Rear Hatch Lock/Latch Mechanism stuck

My shit is rusted.  I ordered the part last year, but ended up just taking the old one apart and wire-brushing it.  One year later I am having the same issue.  I will be installing the new handle in a week or two.  IIRC, the part was not that much,  maybe $45 ?

What part # did you order?

BTW - come join the Ohio Saabaru group on FB if you're on there.

I just might join that group.  I guess the part it was even less than I thought.  $29 on ebay shipped.

Like I said, I haven't installed this yet, but it's on my list.  I'll report any issues I have with installing this part, but it looks the same.

Also, to the OP, I think that shop is full of shit. I seriously doubt that the cable could be stretched.  It doesn't get a lot of force like jerking on a hand brake.  Your hinge is rusted and so is the return spring.  Because the spring has to work harder and is weaker, it will not put the handle back in its resting position as mentioned above. The handle is the only piece you need to replace.

Re: Rear Hatch Lock/Latch Mechanism stuck

I experience this issue almost daily.
I too am from Ohio, my car has spent it's entire life in Cleveland so my handle is as rusted as can be.

Should I order a handle and spring/latch?

Re: Rear Hatch Lock/Latch Mechanism stuck

Anyone actually install the replacement pyromancy mentioned (62150AA211) ? Did it work out?

I spent today ripping out the hatch interior panel due to this issue and it looks like it's time to replace the handle.
