Re: LYTM jeeps

Thank you sirs!
I also just noticed I never mentioned in this thread that when I bought it 3 1/2 years ago now, I bought it from the original owner, which is pretty rare.  He gave me a massive folder of receipts, which instantly made me apprehensive.  But, knock on wood, I've been really lucky.  I haven't had any mechanical issues at all. It runs smooth as hell, will start in the dead of winter after not running it for a week, burns no oil, drives smooth, no wobble.  I've been toying with the idea of locating a really clean TJ, but this ones been so good to me Id hate to pay up for a clean one only to have it turn out to be a mechanical money-pit.

Re: LYTM jeeps

An update. The TJ has been replaced by an LJ.  For those that dont know, an LJ is the extended wheelbase Unlimited Wranglers that were produced 2004-2006. They are pretty rare and highly desirable for their extra room and much better road manners.
I check Craigslist on a daily basis looking at Jeeps/parts. In October I came across an ad for an 04 Wrangler with one shitty picture from the front corner that made it look awful and a description of runs good, call for more info and a price of $3850. From the one shitty picture I thought it looked like an LJ, but I couldnt be sure. I called, as the price was too good to be true if it was an LJ. The guy answered and confirmed, yeah, I guess if you put it next to a regular Jeep its longer. Im not sure if that makes it worth more or less. It turns out he was a mechanic in a nearby town who was selling the thing on consignment for the original owner, who were offered next to nothing for it on a trade in. He clearly had no idea what he had, as he could have gotten at least double what he was asking. He told me the few things that were wrong with it and said the price was negotiable based on whether he did the work or the buyer did it themselves.
I made an appointment to see it the next morning, at which point we agreed to $3800 which included him making the few repairs that were needed.
It has 135kmi, which is just broken in and is in overall very good shape. Drives amazing, compared to the shorter wheelbase TJ. The extra room is great in every way. And now having a 6 cyl definitely improves things (plus hitch). A few things still need sorting. I quickly did some things on my own, including a modest lift and swapping over my wheels/tires from my old one. I cant wait for summer, but for now the mission is to sell the old girl, although its a pretty crappy time to try to be selling anything with Christmas. I imagine it will sell quickly after tax returns if not sooner.
Anyway, here it is. I'm psyched to have another red one as well!

Re: LYTM jeeps

Damn.... that's a nice find. I borrowed a buddy's 97ish Wrangler for a camping trip years ago- holy hell was that tight to pack for two people.

Just checked Denver CL: cheapest I saw was over $14k, and it was definitely modded to the detriment of street driving; the mostly stock ones I saw bottomed out at $15.5k asking.

Yeah, that's pretty typical. These things command top dollar, more so in some parts of the country than others and I'd wager that CO is one of the higher end markets. Take this LJR in CO for example that some jac ass is asking $25k for.

I'd never pay half that for a Jeep, but people definitely do.

Re: LYTM jeeps

Not that anyone posts here, or cares for that matter, but I figured I’d update this thread.
I had my Chevy Volt as a daily driver (awesome car btw) and my LJ as a weekend warrior. The lease was due to end in March 2019 and after driving my wife’s CRV I was dead set that I would never own another vehicle without adaptive cruise again. When I found out that the 2019 Jeeps would have ACC available I was sold. I custom ordered an Unlimited Rubicon in January and it was delivered in March just in time for the end of my Volt lease. I had sold my LJ in anticipation of this around January.

It came in at $53k, a lot of money, but I was able to justify it based on no longer having to deal with two vehicles.
Standard Rubicon features (front and rear lockers, beefier axles, electronic sway bar disconnect, bigger tires/brakes, higher clearance fenders, etc.)
Auto trans
Cold weather group (heated seats, steering wheel, remote start)
Dual tops (hard and premium soft top)
Premium audio group (8.4  screen, Alpine stereo, GPS, auto-dimming mirror)
Active safety and advanced safety groups (park assist, blinspot, adaptive cruise, forward collision…)
LED’s
Remote proximity

I’ve really enjoyed it so far. No complaints what-so-ever.

Nice jeep. I hear this generation is a lot better on the road than previous models were.

Re: LYTM jeeps

Thanks.
I’ve never driven nor ridden in a JK, but by all accounts the JL is supposed to have much better road manners than the JK and infinitely better than any previous Jeep.
It’s not exactly plush, but it is a nice ride for a solid axle box on wheels. Certainly better than a ’68 LR.
