Will These Headers fit my '05 Linear?

I have been reading around and found a link to eBay for UEL headers (borla replica) but the link was dead.  So i wondered if this would fit: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/SUBARU-I … ccessories

???

I want one that will bolt right up.  And yes, i do kinda like that boxer grumble.  Just don't want any punk kids with flat bills to comment on my car though.  I'm also going to pick up an STi axleback in Dallas this weekend.  The guy wants $80... is this too much?

Thanks.

Re: Will These Headers fit my '05 Linear?

The header will fit, and it will make a slight improvement in power but it won't change the sound.  Mine gives a slight rattle on decel in certain conditions.  It seems to be the pipes that run parallel to each other and touching, but are only welded at the end.  I tweaked them a little and got some improvement, but think a spot of weld wouild be best.  Mind you, that's a minor complaint, and I haven't heard it with other Borla-replica headers.  Minor quality control issues on Chinese knock-offs?  I've heard the genuine Borlas had a tendency to crack, and that the relicas are actually better.

I don't know anything about the STi axleback.  I thought the diameter was a little different, but am not sure.  I'm sure someonewith direct experience will help out.

Re: Will These Headers fit my '05 Linear?

Yes, those will fit.  I just bolted up ones I ordered from ebay 2 days ago.  I had to fit the driver's side on first then tug a little to make the passenger's side go on.  other than that, everything fit nicely.  As for the sti axleback, the bolt holes on the flange are a little farther apart than the stock midpipe so you will either have to cut off the existing flange on the axleback and weld a new one on or make the bolt holes into ovals so that the bolts can go through.

As for the difference in piping, the sti axleback is 2.5 inches whereas ours is smaller and that sounds like a pretty decent price for one unless you can find one for cheaper at a junkyard.  i was lucky enough to find my pro-drive oval at a junkyard and got it for $50.00.  big_smile

Re: Will These Headers fit my '05 Linear?

Nice  arrow-up . That's just what i wanted to hear.  Can you send the link where you bought yours?  I will be doing this soon.  And yeah, i have a welder and a torch, so i was thinking about just cutting my stock pipe, heating it up, and flaring it a little to fit the stock STi axleback pipe.  Then just weld the two together in the middle (instead of messing with the bolt holes at all).  This should work.  And if there is any buzz or rattle from the aftermarket headers, like lizzardo mentioned, I can add some weld material where there are gaps.  Thanks gentlemen.  This is a big help.  up

Re: Will These Headers fit my '05 Linear?

Does it come with a place to install the O2 sensor, or is that further down the line?

The O2 sensors are both downstream of the header flange.

Re: Will These Headers fit my '05 Linear?

Perfect. Thank you for the speedy reply. I just hit a huge rock on my way in to work this morning and now my exhaust manifold is leaking big time around the driver's side near the head.  So i figure why not just upgrade.  Unless one of you guys has a stock manifold and wants to sell it to me in 78745.  The price for an aftermarket UEL header from ebay is $139.00 w/ free shipping.

Everything I've read on the UEL header is that you actually end up losing power.

Re: Will These Headers fit my '05 Linear?

I couldn't find the EL headers, UEL's are the most prevalent on the interwebs... So I just ordered them.  As of now, my car sounds like crap with a leaky exhaust.

Just as an estimation, what is the noticeable loss?  Because I'm just looking for an inexpensive replacement here, I'm never going to be racing my car.  If we are talking 5-10hp, that's not really that big of a deal to me.  This car just has to run well for years to come and keep getting 26mpg's in the city and 30mpg's on the hwy.  up That's all I require of it.

I didn't notice any real loss in hp with the new header.  it seems more responsive if anything. lol.

Re: Will These Headers fit my '05 Linear?

Yeah, i just don't see how we could loose much power over the stock header.  It's too late anyway, I already ordered it and should be installing it before we leave for the Dominican Republic.  Thanks for the reply's anyway.  I'll post my header install when i get back to the USA.  Maybe some sound bytes this time.

Re: Will These Headers fit my '05 Linear?

Ok, so I'm back from the all inclusive world of Bavaro, Dominican Republic.

http://i.imgur.com/roQJB.jpg

I got up super early to beat the heat and install this thing.  I ran into one snag in the process, but other than that one hurdle (to be explained later in the installation) everything went pretty smoothly.

First step is to jack up car and put on jack stands (with rear wheels chocked for safety).  Next, get 14mm deep socket with extension and penetrating fluid along with a 12mm boxed end wrench.  Also, a cheater bar was helpful with this process.  Use the 14mm deep socket with extension to loosen the nuts holding the stock exhaust manifold onto the heads.  There are 6 of them, 3 on each side.  Next, I had to struggle with the bolts/nuts at the manifold collector joint with the stock cat section.  I struggled with them for a while (15 mins or so) before deciding to take the whole front section off for better access. To take this section off, unplug the up-stream and down-stream O2 sensors at their connecting plug in the engine bay, and unclip the retainer clips holding the sensor wires.  They are like an arrow, once they pierce through their bracket, they won't come out unless you pinch from the back side.

The stock exhaust manifold with the cat section attached  arrow-down

Now that you have access to the bolts holding the cat section to the manifold section (read collector), spray some penetrating fluid on there and break them loose.  After breaking them loose, re-install the stock cat section back on the car.

Now, compare the stock exhaust manifold and the borla replica header for posterity  arrow-down

Bolt both sides of the header up and use new header gaskets supplied with the header.  arrow-down

Hint, with these headers i had to bolt up one side loosly and then stretch the other side to fit on the studs.  It also helps to remove the plastic shield from under the car.  It seemed odd, but it's not too extreme of a stretch.  So i have stretchy headers, RLB has stretchy tires.

After tightening all of the bolts, plug the O2 sensors back into their respective plugs and put the plastic shield back on the underside of the car.  This is the finished product.  arrow-down

Now, I have to say one thing about the sound.  It is pleasingly under-whelming.  After driving this thing around with a major manifold leak for about a week, the low pitched tone from the header and STi axleback was really nice.  I was sort of expecting a much louder car after this, but it really isn't.  I'd say it's very comparable to the stock exhaust manifold, except for having more of a grumble or rumble or whatever you call it.  Now keep in mind i only replaced this because a rock the size of a football (not futbol) happened under my car whilst on the highway and damaged my exhaust manifold.  So i wasn't looking for some massive power gains or super loud raspy-rice exhaust.  I got exactly what I wanted out of this and I like it.  So for now, my mod bug has subsided (except for replacing my single CD unit with a stock 6CD head unit).

Re: Will These Headers fit my '05 Linear?

All the listings I found for headers were for 97-05 I think. I'll do some research though.

Ok, found a thread on RS2.5 and it says the UEL header from the '97-'05 will work, but you have to replace your stock cat section with that from an '05 as well.  It looks like your O2 sensors are not on the first cat, but on the collector section of the manifold/header.  What a PITA.  If you already have an aftermarket axleback, no need to replace the manifold IMO.

Re: Will These Headers fit my '05 Linear?

I used a deep socket on a medium-long extension (12" or so) to remove and replace the nuts holding the header at the exhaust ports.  If you've got that available, I expect it'd be much easier than the box wrench.
