Re: MOPAR OR NO CAR! -ikbrown's 68 Charger

No material updates to the Charger but here are a couple pics from this fall. One from cars and coffee w/ my padres' MGB and the other just from admiring her while putting her away in the garage. ha.

When I was at cars and coffee an older lady came up to me saying how thankful she was to see the Charger there since her husband and her were original owners of a 68 Charger and since he passed away recently it reminded her of him. Always cool to make someone's day while taking the Charger out and talk with other owners who've experienced the car. Since it's not the usual camaro/vette/mustang at Cars and Coffee it does seem to draw a fair amount of attention.  up

Thanks! Sort of on opposite ends of the car spectrum but both very fun in their own way.

Re: MOPAR OR NO CAR! -ikbrown's 68 Charger

Overdue for an update on here. After years of daydreaming about steelies I finally purchased a set to install on the Charger. Unfortunately, things are still in progress so all I have are some test-fit photos at the moment but I hope to get it all ironed out soon!

Short story long is everyone stocks the 15x10 wheels for Mopars in 5.5" backspacing which works for 99% of mopar b-bodies, unfortunately for mine the wheel/tire combo was too far inward and was very clearly going to rub on the inside wheel well  banghead. SOOoooooo I will be messing around with some washers this weekend to determine what backspacing would be perfecto for my application (I'm thinking it will be 5") and then will order a set with custom backspacing from Wheel Vintiques, the manufacturer of these OE steelies.

Stay tuned, hopefully I'll have everything sorted out and installed soon!

Re: MOPAR OR NO CAR! -ikbrown's 68 Charger

Thanks guys! I did some measurements this weekend mocking up what 5.25 or 5" backspacing would do for the wheels vs. the 5.5" currently. I think the conclusion is 5.25" will be sufficient and not put it too close to the outside fender cuz there's less obstacles on the inner fender which is nice and vertical vs. the outside fender which has the fender lip for mounting the wheel well trim (we grinded some of that off where it was thicker than it needs to be) and about an inch above that the wheel well comes in at a 45 degree angle for another 2 inches or so, and then back up vertically. Who knows why.

I'd love to have the T5/M66 powerplant from my old C30 set up in the rear of a two-seater.  I don't have time or resources to build one from scratch, but if the weight were 2000-2200 lbs, it'd be quite a performer.

The C30 is small enough it almost might as well have been a two-seater. Was a cool little car!

SO Charger wheels update: Called Summit and they'll be picking up the 5.5" backspacing wheels to return and I ordered a set of the same wheels with 5.25" backspacing so they'll sit further from the inside wheel well. Could've been achieved with spacers but I wasn't thrilled about putting even quarter inch spacers on the stock wheel studs since they're not very long to begin with, and installing longer wheel studs was more expensive than just returning these and ordering a set with the proper backspacing. This way it SHOULD be perfecto with no need to use spacers. When we test-fit mocking up a quarter inch spacer it allowed .5" of clearance on both sides.

Only bummer is the custom wheel leadtime from Wheel Vintiques is 4-6 weeks! And my wife and I have our first baby expecting now in t-minus 6 weeks. haha cutting it close.  lol

Thanks for the help with my car seat - I was thinking I wouldn't be able to install it in the Charger since the seatbelts are sheit but I hadn't thought of the roof and zip-ties. So smart!

And yea yea I will get some pics up on here - just need to find some spare time between work, caring for our 6 week old at home, and finishing season 2 of Making a Murderer. ha.

Haha even better!

Ok here's the overdue update! So the customer order wheels took 2 months to get shipped and by the time they were here we had welcomed our son into the world so things were quite busy. To make matters worse, the wheel finish on the custom wheels was chipped on the rims. I contacted Summit about it and they said they could take them back but I'd have to wait the custom wheel order time again or I could take some $ to apply towards re-coating them. Took them to a powdercoater locally and they look perfecto. Sucks I had to do that but at least they're on now.

The final setup is:

15x8 (4" bs) on 245s in the front
15x10 (5.25" bs) on 295s in the rear

To get the poser stock car look I wanted I mounted the tires blackwall out and applied Goodyear tire stickers over the BFGoodrich letters on the tires.

I'm super happy with how it looks now that the cheese grater wheels are gone and the tires finally fill in the massive Charger fenders. AND there's no rubbing at all - even when I had 2 other people in the car this week.

On to the pics!

Man that looks good probably the best looking Charger I’ve ever seen. I know it’s a muscle car and all, but do you notice any handling improvements with the wider rubber?

Thanks Max! No difference in handling in terms of the front tires since those just went from a 235 to a 245. To make improvements on the 'it drives like a boat' front I'd need to start replacing A LOT of suspension components to tighten it up. Upgrading shocks and bushings would help up front but we may just buy a whole new modern K-frame for the front to upgrade so I've been holding off on any piece-meal upgrades up there.

The 295s have definitely helped grip tho. It's much harder to break the tires loose than my old 235s back there - it just wants to take off!
