Re: Ford Transit Connect

I'm sure your Transit will be on the car show circuit sooner or later, so with that in mind I'd say the bags will be the way to go. Plus all the leveling benefits you've already alluded to.

Re: Ford Transit Connect

So, we talked yesterday and I decided bags isn't the way to go. They certainly could do it and have installed a lot of systems before, but it isn't really the route for me.

The complexity and cost of the system doesn't seem really compatible with my goals/plans for the van. I wouldn't use it to raise/lower all the time, show it, slam it in parking lots, etc. I just want good handling, some height adjustability, and reliability.

So, the plan is to use a set of BC Racing coilovers in the front (for a FoST - bolt right in - they already used them on their 2013 SEMA TC). For the rear, we'll use adjustable shocks from GAZ in the UK which are bolt-in for lowering the TC. There's a much more active van-modding community over there. For springs, I'm not totally clear yet on the setup but we'll basically use the same thing they did for the SEMA TC as well, which does allow for height adjustments as well.

Re: Ford Transit Connect

Other loose ends...I'm not sure we're at the point where it's just loose ends, really. The engine hasn't run in the van yet. That's the critical milestone.

This past week, they discovered that the hot-side intercooler pipe was slightly damaged in the accident that totaled the donor ST (had Cobb intercooler pipes). They're going to try cutting off the bent end and adding a coupler to resolve it. If that doesn't end up looking great, I'll buy a new one.

To complete:
- Install Mishimoto J-line intercooler
- Install FoST steering column and push start button
- Install FoST steering wheel
- Install ST gauge cluster
- Test start the engine
- Wire in the ST gauges (not clear this will be successful - if not, I'll get backup gauges/senders aftermarket)
- Install single-DIN radio for a space for the auxiliary gauges, install blanking plate, install auxiliary gauges
- Install front speakers/tweeters and rear speakers
- Install dashboard
- Install front end (bumper cover, lights, etc)
- Install FoST coilovers in front, adjustable spring perch/springs in rear, adjustable damper from GAZ/Mod Your Connect in rear
- Install new dessicant/dryer, vacuum and fill A/C
- Reinstall Recaro seats (the have been in and powered, but were removed again for space)
- Install seat heater control
- Transfer ST badges
- Install new tires (and wheels maybe...)
- Paint calipers (gunmetal gray probably)

I think that's pretty much the whole list. We're at least a month out because the rear adjustable shocks will take 4 weeks to arrive. The only real 'iffy' part here is...will it start right away, or will there be a wiring issue to chase.

There's also a question as to whether the first test start will be using the pushstart button from the FoST or the TC ignition system at first, then swap in the ST stuff. The ST uses a bunch of antennas and stuff to energize the ignition, so it's a lot more complicated of a system for just test starting, but it may be necessary to get past any software issues to just do it right off the bat.

A lot has been done, a lot remains...

Re: Ford Transit Connect

Right. The intercooler is in and the front coilovers have been installed. All hoses and connections have been made to the engine, with one exception. That is: the A/C lines. The issue is that the firewall pass-through ports are different between the ST and the TC, meaning you need the TC line. But the ST line shape is slightly different to get around the intercooler piping, and the TC line doesn't work around the piping. So, the solution is to hybrid them. They're aluminum hard lines, so they're cutting the ends and putting the TC port onto the end of the ST line. They have an A/C guy who's got no issue with doing it I guess.

Still no test start yet - will happen when that A/C line goes in.

The GAZ rear shocks also came in, so the rear suspension should be set up next week as well.

Nope. It's at their local Ford dealership currently - reprogramming the keys to work with the immobilizer to let them try to start the thing.

Re: Ford Transit Connect

All the haters and disbelievers....

Behold.

This is the first startup of a FoST engine in a TC. This video was taken at a Ford dealership in Florida that Vaccar has a pretty good relationship with. All the techs and service counter people thought they were insane when it showed up. But, okay, willing to give it a shot. Nobody knew what it would take. Would the keys need to be reprogrammed to match the ST ECU? Would this ever work? The wiring effort was absolutely herculean. What if it wasn't perfect?

Plugging their laptop into the thing, it gave one error. That error was locking out the engine start function after a major crash. They do this as a safety measure, of course, to prevent the thing from getting started after major damage that might have resulted in a leaking fuel system or whatever. It was likely activated because of all the sensors and whatnot that were plugged in and unplugged so many times during the engine swap and the harness hybriding and whatnot. The tech reset that error. Easy. Tried the key, first time, it starts right up.

This is the top of the hill, really. Nothing after this point is crazy and untrod territory. It's happening. I am elated.
