To Keep Or Not To Keep: That Is My Dilemma. Please Help!

Hello all,

I'm considering selling my car and looking for some advice and maybe a value assessment from the seasoned members of the Saaburu community.

I'm the 2nd owner of a 2006 Saab 92x Aero, 5 speed manual, SGM, bone stock and never modified, never raced, ~98k, in pretty good condition body/interior-wise.  The body has some dings and scrapes on the bumpers due to living in the Bronx for 2 years, plus it has some scratches on the hood from snow turned to ice and then slid off, so the paint isn't the best, but other than that, nothing ghastly to look at.  The interior is cloth with no rips or tears; could just use a vacuum and carpet and seat shampoo, but that's about it.

I took this car off the road near the end of 2015 when it was approaching 100k, because I wanted to change the timing belt, had bought another car, my fiancÚ had her lease + a work car, and we had no off-street parking.  So imagine that, lol.  I was able to bring it to her parent's for a while and it sat under a cover for about a year.  I would still go and start it up occasionally and bring it up to temp.  July of '17 we moved into a house with a garage, so it's been sitting in a covered garage ever since.  Mechanically, the engine runs fine, but will need some minor maintenance that I may even do myself if I do decide to sell.  But I'm not sure I feel like doing the timing belt, or paying someone to do it if I'm just going to turn around and sell.  Also, the power steering pump is long gone.  So obviously that will need to be taken care of and could be done at the same time.

Now where my dilemma begins and why I'm having a hard time letting go of this car, is because I'm watching how the 80's and 90's Japanese sports car market is just exploding right now.  I would kick myself if I sold this thing when it's value is low due to needing some repairs, when I could just hold onto it for a long while, even if I never drive it and possibly the market becomes insane.  So I ask: do you think that's a trend that could ultimately follow to the 92x?  And also, with my description above, what do you think a reasonable asking price for this car would be if I decide to sell "as is" compared to if I fix the minor issues first?

I feel like even though these cars aren't worth a hell of a lot, they're still very rare and I used to get the thumbs up and compliments all the time when driving it, which makes me believe there may be a serious demand in the future.

Anyway, thanks for reading and looking forward to your advice,
-Chris

Rust is the biggest factor, you may want to give a proper inspection for rusting issues. As an investment I'm not sure, I hope they do well in the future but I have no great hopes there.

If you want to see the car through that long then you need to start collecting parts, not just keeping up with maintenance.  A front end collision could kill it if you don't have a spare hood/bumper/fenders/headlights.  Of course, this is a more extreme reaction then most will have who'd like to save their cars.  No telling if it will be worth it or not 20 years from now.
You can look at prices for 06 WRX wagons selling around you and take about 1,500 off to get the price you might get for the 9-2x.  If you do keep it, at least drive it about twice a month for 30 minutes to allow everything to heat up properly.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but Satin Grey Metallic was a color for 2005 only. 2006 Aeros only came in Midnight Black, Brilliant Red, or Arctic Silver.

And yeah, if you've got rust issues in the rear strut towers, it has ceased to be anything collectible.

This is definitely the biggest risk to the condition and therefore, collect-ability of Saabarus in snowy winter states. As much as I'd love to see the Saabaru get its due for collector car due to its uniqueness I just don't see values going up any time soon, and at what unknown point they do start going up it'll only be for the best condition, low miles rust-free examples.

As for your specific situation it depends. Any outstanding maintenance issue is ammo for a potential buyer to offer less for the car so as long as you understand that and account for at least $1k off an equivalent comparable saabaru sale  due to it needing timing belt and a power steering pump at least, then that would be your path of least resistance.

You never know what will happen. It would need to be in REAL good condition and rarely driven though.

In 15 years it might have its value climb. You could get Pontiac Fiero's and 80's Trans Am's for two grand ten years ago. Now clean low mileage examples are pulling in 8-12k if not higher for some special models.

Porsche 944's were similar. You used to could get one for super cheap. No one wanted a used 944. But 80's cars are becoming more collectible, and due to the Porsche name their value jumped.

It isn't super likely they will be "collectible" , but if in 2026 you are rolling to your cars and coffee with a pristine 06 Saabaru, people will certainly take notice and might make offers.
