I know the first thing everyone is going to say is 207, easier, been done, everyone knows it and therefor can do it. Long block alone is my budget. So, here’s what I’m looking at:
Option 1: EJ20x/y can be had sub $1000 with ecu or about $1200 with trans
Option 2: JDM 205 single avcs $1400 with ecu no trans
The 20x/y is dual avcs, dbw, 9.5:1cr with open deck (thicker cylinder walls then 207). Apparently these run a CANBUS system and my tuner says they are a lot more work with wiring. He said he can get around the dbw issue, but in order to have all the body control functions there’s extra work involved. I haven’t heard of body control units in our cars. Do any of you gurus know anything about this? Is it just another word for ecu? If so, are we talking about basic functions like lighting, tach, speedo, etc? If this is specific to VDC and other traction control devices it seems like it doesn’t matter then since my 05 has none of that.
I know the 205 is an easy swap and the avcs wiring is straight forward. I’d just rather put the extra money toward other items to complete the build or have a lower mileage trans since mine is at 230k now.
For those of you who are going to ask, eventual plans include 18g or similar turbo. Looking for a bit more power then VF39 but more important is respooling turbo quickly so I want ball bearing. Will have larger TMIC, and other supporting mods for either swap. Going to start off with VF39 or similar to get a feel then upgrade once I know how it feels to drive. Already have most suspension parts done to handle extra power, only things left are MC brace and TIC fender braces. What I really need help with is the above questions on our computer/electrical system. Thanks everyone. Let the flaming begin. Oh right not NASIOC

Is your car a MY05 or MY06, makes a difference in ECU compatibility as MY05 is 16 bit. I'm surprised an EJ20X or Y would be so much cheaper, but that sounds like a world of headaches I wouldn't want to jump into.

05. Sorry that was in my info thing on the side. Don’t know why it disappeared. I was very shocked by how much cheaper the x/y swaps are. I found a y this morning with trans, ecu, and full harness for $1200. It’s hard to get a 205 with ecu for that price. I am leaning toward the 205 for less headache. Maybe in the future I’ll pick up an x/y and figure it out. I enjoy puzzles but I’m on a little bit of a time crunch this summer as I don’t have much time off from work to get this done.

for an 05 Aero the only real options without considering ECU and wiring differences are an 02-05 USDM WRX motor or the JDM EJ205 v7 with intake AVCS (and you just dont use the AVCS).
the EJ255/EJ257 motors or any quad AVCS use totally different cams and cam sensors and are in general not compatible with the 02-05 WRX / 05 Aero wiring and ECU

You will regret swapping an avcs motor and not having avcs functional, it is miserable.
