Timing belt job - sanity check, please

So, after putting it off way too long, I'm finally getting around to doing the timing belt on my '05 Aero (88k miles). I was quoted $1300 from the local guy I normally use, in central NJ. Is that really high?

That is high, but depends what is being done and what brand of parts are being used. I would expect tensioner, rollers, idler, water pump at a minimum. Not surprising to have leaky valve cover gaskets and cam or main seals up front as well. Gates belt kit used to be the way to go but it sounds like they've had some quality issues in the last few years.

Are they doing other services with that which would put it above and beyond the typical price? I think mine was around $800 when I replaced it along with the usual components recommended to be replaced while you're in there. I got a $1k+ quote from a Subaru specialist shop w/ expensive labor though.

Just had it done, I paid $400 for all the parts online (OEM) and paid $400 for a shop to do it.

Re: Timing belt job - sanity check, please

OK, so the number is indeed high. Thanks for confirming, folks.

I'll clarify this, but as far as I know, no - all I asked for was a quote on the timing belt job. Maybe he decided to add additional timing-belt-related items? I'll find out.

Can I ask where you found the parts online? This is a path that never occurred to me, but it sounds a whole hell of a lot better than paying through the nose.

eBay! There are a lot of sellers selling factory timing kits.
