That panel is annealed low carbon steel.  That process will make it stronger.

I don't want to get into an argument with another engineer, I don't have the time to research tonight  biggrin.  I do agree that the steel will work harden and I'll call it at that smile.

I could go on...and on....and on....  But people's eyes glaze over pretty soon after "work hardening" comes up (and they are sound asleep after the word "martensite" is uttered.....)   smile

wink - I felt the exact same way.

Side story, I have an extremely difficult environment at work on an automation machine that I need to get several pieces of metal to survive. They are subjected to repeated cycling to 1900 F and a boiling 1.5 pH acid, along with some impact and wear. So far thermal stress cracking is the biggest issue. 309 SS is doing well but with researching I found the perfectly suited metal called alloy 230. It's not cheap but the biggest problem would be machining he damn stuff with our in house mills (wish we had a wire EDM). Here is the composition of Haynes Alloy 230: 2% molybdenum, 14% tungsten, 22% chromium and most of the rest is nickle.  sad

Re: The Cool Shit Thread

Good luck with that.  Brutal application.  our wire EDM is gathering dust because the agency closed our central shop to renovate a building for more lab and office space.  Haven't found suitable space to set it up; if we don't soon we are going to donate it to Metro State.  We've identified some decent wire shops in Denver, I can track down contact info for you if that were to be helpful.

Re: The Cool Shit Thread

Thanks, I may take you up on the Denver contacts. I've designed it so the metal taking the brunt of the thermal load is quick to replace and simple to machine. But I still need several sets which I would like to have made outside my machine shop.

Re: The Cool Shit Thread

If you've got ~15 minutes, this is worth the read. If this had been a movie I would have rolled my eyes at the ridiculous premise.

Re: The Cool Shit Thread

This is cool shit to watch, its just cool shit that happened to me. Last week I hit 15 years at my company and I revieved 3000 recognition points ($300), which can be used at the Employee Store to buy a bunch of shit. I already had 2900 points in my account from other shit, so I decided I wanted the Gopro Hero 5, and the Gopro Seeker backpack, and GP remote. I ended up being 17 points short, I have an in with HR and asked her to throw me some more points, she ended up giving me an extra 250 ($25).

After that one of my coworkers told me not to buy the products from the employee store because the prices are higher than Amazon, and you can buy Amazon gift cards on the employee store. So I cashed in all of my points for $600 in Amazon gift cards and was able to pick up more than I would have gotten from the employee store. I got the Hero 5, Seeker pack, extra battery, smart remote, and 2 64gb cards.

That is a pretty sweet 15 year annivesary gift.

Re: The Cool Shit Thread

Good deal!

I did something like that at my work. Got a nice award for a project that I did that went way better than any one in my group expected, even me. I put the points towards Cabelas Gift Cards  and drove over to them that afternoon and bought a Savage A17 with scope. First new gun I had ever bought. Goes well with the rest of my guns.
