2005 Aero A/T?

Hey guys and gals. Me and the wife are going to be traveling to look at a 2005 Aero automatic with 159k miles for $5,400. It's at a dealer and unfortunately they have no service records nor can they get ahold of the previous owner. So I have no way to know if the timing belt has been replaced. It has a "Saabaru" emblem on it and the dealership says the previous owners were enthusiasts and took good care of it. It will be a vehicle for my wife and reliability is a big concern. Any advice?

I feel the price is about right with other aeros I've seen for sale online. If the car checks out I'll probably just put $5,000 cash on the table and see how long it takes them to take it. They seemed firm on $5,400 though.

Thanks in advance,
Nash

Do the timing belt and related parts.  If you have no proof, assume it hasn't been done.

That's the plan. I'm guessing it will be around $1,00-$1,500? I don't know what the labor hours to do it are. But that's what I'm budgeting.

Cost me like $800 or so.  I sourced the parts myself and had a local mechanic put it on.  I did the water pump too, while some people don't, but better safe than sorry.

If you're mechanically inclined, with a decent set of hand tools, it can be done in a day. Mine took 5 hours - I did all pulleys, belts, water pump, and crank seal. Cost me less than $400, IIRC.

It needs to be very clean for that price with 159k miles. Inspect inside the rear wheel wells very carefully for discoloration or rust near the seat bracket bolts. Will need to remove the rear wheels to do that.

Re: 2005 Aero A/T?

Thanks for the information. According to the carfax drewsro was kind enough to get for me, it's been involved in two accidents. One of which it could not be driven afterwards. Plus it was also originally a north east car. Jersey to be exact. When we go look at it I will be sure to check the wheel wells and check the paint to make sure it's not garbage. I'm leaning towards no on this one but the wife has her heart set on it. So I have to at least give it a chance.
