2018 WRX & STI

Soooo Subaru put out some details on the new 2018 WRX and STI mid-cycle refresh - saw it on NASIOC today. I like the minor front-end appearance changes to the bumper and lines, the new STI wheels and crazy brake color, but the STI is still holding on to the EJ engine, as sadly was still expected. They better get rid of that thing by the next re-design in 2020 or so. Get with it Subaruuuu.

Re: 2018 WRX & STI

Have you driven a new gen STI? IMO the EJ still feels great and gives the car far more character than the new FA WRX has. Sure it's probably time they upgrade to something with better fuel economy, but performance wise with the amazing new chassis I see nothing wrong with it.

I'm so glad they aren't changing the rear end to look like the new impreza though.

Re: 2018 WRX & STI

I thought the WRX was supposed to use the new platform in 2018, is that true with these?

That was rumored but looks like that won't happen till the next full redesign.

Soulman, I've test driven a current gen WRX and STI while waiting for our Forester to have the oil changed (since we had 1st 3 free) but I didn't drive them back to back so hard for me to compare - plus it's been a few years. I just think it's weird they have a new engine for the rex but keep truckin along w/ the same ol EJ in the STI. You'd think they would want to adopt that engine in the STI. Maybe they'll skip the FA in the STI altogether and go to a new engine in 2020? hmmm.

Lol, and yea that new Impreza butt is pretty fugly - per the usual for Subaru. haha. They don't really make good looking cars. The hatch looks only slightly better than the sedan Impreza.

Re: 2018 WRX & STI

I know they try to switch things up after 5 years, so I guess we won't see the redesign until 2020.  The Crosstrek should be getting a redesign for 2018.  If they put a turbo in one of those I would be all over it  big_smile

This. They need to get with it both in terms of better economy, and better power delivery. It wouldn't hurt to actually make a decent interior since these things are mid 30's.  The RS does everything an STI does, just better for a marginally more expensive price point.  Brand loyalty will only carry you so far, especially with all of the incredible press the RS has gotten.

Re: 2018 WRX & STI

Everyone will comment about the issues with the rear diff when upgrading power on the RS, but no one wants to talk about the ringlands on that 20 year old 2.5 liter.

Eh, Ska blew his FoST up with pretty much the same situation, but he did get the motor replaced under warranty.

Shit, what were the specifics of that? My car is at 53,000 miles on OTS stage II and seems great.

I don't see how the focus ST/ RS interiors are any better than the  15+ WRX/STI unless you include the Recaros which they now do.

I don't know too much of the specifics - he had a turboback exhaust and had it tuned at Snail, nothing crazy in terms of the tune. He had FW rebuild it back to stock and then he traded it in. If you check out their insta page I think the FA motor carnage from a couple weeks ago was his.

It was covered under warranty which was what I intended when I played by the rules and got the Ford Racing tune.

The process however was awful because the dealership service foreman was irresponsive and incompetent.

Shout out to Bentmettle for taking an interest in the process and having Ford Performance contact that dummy after they put stock spark plugs back in.

Dealerships. Fuck.
