So I have a question about that blacked out / plastidipped scoop opening...
That part of my scoop is completely oxidized/fucked/peeling/shitty; worse than this: 
until I can get the car proper painted (which I plan to do eventually, whenever I get approval from the wife/cfo), would it look better if scrape off the flakes and plastidip it black?
Curious to hear your opinions.

Plastidip comes in a ton of colors now, and custom cans can be had. I'd match as close as possible to your existing car color and give it a go. You could do the same with real paint if you felt lumpy textured paint would look weird.

I say get some 3m 1080 carbon fiber vinyl on the scoop 
Heat gun and some vinyl off amazon and you can DIY it (taking the scoop off of course).

How hard is vinyl to do on compound curves? The front lip on my fit is ugly as hell, thinking about getting some goofy ebay vinyl and continuing down the boy racer path with that car.

It's not going to match perfectly and my take is that it would stick out more/look worse if you used a color close to what it is.

It's cheap to buy on Ebay is smaller sizes to play with. I can wrap a laptop but total failure trying to wrap side mirrors on the wagon. There is a real learning curve.

Vinyl can be tricky the sharper the curve is. Also helps if you can hide the end of the vinyl on the backside of the curve. All I can say is use a heatgun and be ready to rip it off and start over a few times
