A day after putting the Legacy wheels with All-seasons back on the car as the summer setup, a set of O.Z. Ultraleggera 17x8 +48 with Dunlop Direzza Z1* tires showed up locally. The tires have about a season left, and one of the wheels appears to have a slight bend on the lip, but otherwise are in great shape. These have been on my short list of wheels that fit both my taste...and future plans



Since day one of owning the car, the ride was a bit bouncy and harsh, while still having too much body roll in corners for my taste. The combination of KYB-G struts and Epic springs from the previous owner looks good statically, but really just wasn't right for me. After days of research into struts and springs, figuring out which of STi pinks, RCE yellows or blacks or wagon blacks matched with Konis or Dspecs or Feal-revalved STi struts with zerk fittings would be right, and how ride height could be adjusted with lowering camber plates and on and on and on, my conclusion was...to get ST V1 coilovers instead. While they are only galvanized, rather than the equivalent stainless steel KW V1s, the bang for buck just makes them far too attractive to go with anything else right now. Paired with new Group N front and rear top hats (and the all important front strut cone washers) they are a much better setup for my needs.

The install with a neighbor with hand tools in our uneven parking lot on the cold asphalt in 38F weather at night after work went surprisingly well, since it was before the torrential rain came about an hour later. A friend gave me a tip for a Subaru guy who works at the Firestone right down the street from me who dialed in the height and alignment on the nice Hunter machine they have there for the price of a regular alignment and an hour of labor.

The car actually rides lower now (by choice), but is much easier to manage around the pothole filled roads of Boston with the stiffer spring rates, and combined with the stickier tires it handles substantially better. All in all a great setup, and hopefully with anti-sieze on the collar threads and regular cleanings during winter time they will last quite a while.









The only things that sometimes rub with the new suspension are the mudflaps, not too shabby at all.



While mods that have functionality are my usual preference, OEM dead-stock 9-2x door sill plates were too enticing to pass up. Curious if anyone knows how much they were as a dealer option at the time?



The big news is that the clutch sometimes slips in 4th (and 5th) gear at anything beyond moderate throttle. This isn't a huge surprise, now that it's being asked to hold quite a bit more than factory torque, but it means decision time: replace the clutch with one that will hold make the transmission the weakest link, or bite the bullet and upgrade everything. After much discussion with Saabaru300 about his new setup, as well as a local friend with a V7 swapped 04 wagon...the path forward seems clear. Now it's just a matter of when

Part number 32009562. Got them from eBay actually, but be advised they came with some bends in them from being taped together for over a decade, so you will have to carefully bend them back into shape.

Don't have an accurate scale to know exactly how much lighter, but roughly about 21 lbs savings each is what Mickey says on the site. He also describes the benefits--basically, dropping substantial mass from the nose of the car helps reduce understeer and makes turn in quicker because the car's center of mass is brought further away from the nose inward, meaning it the car is easier to rotate (simplifying things here somewhat). The rear is more for overall weight reduction.

Yeah, the meet was a good time...though my hunch is another 10 years most of the surviving examples will be out west...most

This is interesting data, I didn't realize there were changes to the SRS system during this timeframe. I have a MY05 and the seats are too tall for me to fit with a helmet thanks to the sunroof. I'm looking into getting some new brackets made to lower the seat but there isn't much room under there, so a different stock seat may be a good solution *if* they are lower. Did you notice any difference in seat height when you swapped seats? I have access to a set of MY02 seats, I'll need to put one in and see if there's any change, I was under the impression they were the exact same seat as my stock seats apart from the covers.
