Finally finished my Head Unit+SkyFi2+Amp+12" sub install! pics inside

To start, i want to thank all the people that posted pictures and how to's of their installs(especially purduealum91 and griffinstyle)..This first pic is of the mounting of the Silver Din pocket that everyone else seems to be getting. Everyone was right about it being kind of a pain to fit onto the brackets. I ended up drilling holes for the pocket "nubs" like griffinstyle did(see black arrow in pic below). However, my holes werent small enough, so my pocket kept moving around in the dash. So i drilled a hole in the actual din pocket only on the right side(the left side cant be drilled because of the moving parts for the door). the hole i drilled lined up with the front most hole on the bracket. see the red arrow below.

http://img299.imageshack.us/img299/8317/dscn06932by.jpg

The next pic is of it installed in the dash. for those of you that want step by step instructions on opening up the dash, see purduealum91's extremely helpful post. if you guys are adding after market headunits, make sure you power the window antenna or your reception will go down the tubes. i used the Sony CDX-R5715X ($158.06 shipped from 6ave.com). This head unit is a great bang for the buck. aux in and 2 preamp outs and sub outs too. also a ton of equalizer settings and low and high pass filters. it also sorta matches the interior.  here's my finished install.

http://img299.imageshack.us/img299/6749/dscn06947sd.jpg

the pocket is a great place for my remotes smile. I know a lot of you dont like these additional XM modules. i prefer this than the xm controls built into headunits. you get alot more info (stocks, sports scores..etc), and a great interface and good display. i also am getting the home kit too so i can use this module in the house. it easily undocks from the car kit.  the Skyfi2 also easily and conveniently mounts on the air vent. it doesnt really bother me cuz the vent next to it can hit me directl just as well.

http://img299.imageshack.us/img299/5998/dscn06953qb.jpg

i used the aux output from the xm to the input of my headunit. its pretty easy to route the wires as seen in the next pic. the antenna wire goes this way too. dont mind the dust

http://img299.imageshack.us/img299/4211/dscn06963fg.jpg

the xm antenna is on the roof. i had crappy reception inside. i wanted it to be centered on the roof, but i ran out of wire. yes, the car is filthy, it rained this morning.

http://img299.imageshack.us/img299/9637/dscn06973om.jpg

i had the amp wired at circuit city for $70. not too bad of a price. i didnt want to deal with running the wires through the firewall and stuff,a nd they did it in much better time than i would have been able to. they did scratch my dash, which is annoying, but i probably would have too. here is the amp mounted on the box. it fits teh contour of the back seat well as you can see. teh box barely fits under the beam for the cover. any larger and i would have had to get a new sub and box cuz there is no way i would leave this thing exposed for thieves.

http://img299.imageshack.us/img299/788/dscn06992xb.jpg

a view from behind the other seat...

http://img299.imageshack.us/img299/246/dscn07017mw.jpg

here is a pic of the box. yes, its huge and takes up half my trunk. i had this box in my old car and it tookup the entire trunk and i never had to move it once. if i needed to haul stuff, it takes 5 minutes to unscrew the wires and take the box out. a minor inconvinence, but like i said, i barely haul anything. i didnt get this car cuz it was a wagon, that was just an added plus.

http://img299.imageshack.us/img299/4637/dscn07004sn.jpg

did i mention this thing hits really hard? it used to be in my bmw, and those things pass like no sound through from the trunk. now with this big open cabin, i had to turn everything way down. now i just need to get something to stop the licens plate rattle smile

there is an inch of clearance between the amp and sub box on the upper and lower sides(you cant see it in the pics, and there is no clearance on the sides) and there is also a fan on the underside. all the hot air should radiate out just fine.

How are you powering the SkiFi2?  Are you using the standard 12V plug that came with the kit, or did you splice into the cigarrette lighter 12V line?

for now im just using the cigarette lighter socket. its the only really exposed wire right now. i could hardwire it, but i dont wanna cut the power cord cuz i might be selling this unit in the near future to switch over to sirius.

Re: Finally finished my Head Unit+SkyFi2+Amp+12" sub install! pics inside

One more question, did you run the antenna wire through the floor or the ceiling, and is it hidden?  My skyfi2 arrives tomorrow, so i'm looking at ways to make a clean install.

I commute with another car, so I'd like to easily move the radio between the two.

Re: Finally finished my Head Unit+SkyFi2+Amp+12" sub install! pics inside

I'd be a little cautious about putting the antenna on the roof. The long term vibration will narf up your paint. My antenna is on the passenger side dashboard. I drove from NY to California and had no reception problems except when I was going through some canyons in Colorado.

I'd also recommend the FM Direct Kit (http://shopdelphi.com/products/consumer … ctadaptor/). It clears up the reception a lot. My skyfi2 is vent mounted on the passenger side center vent with all the wire running through the vent. It's powered with the cig adapter spliced into the OEM adapter.

For any of you looking to purchase any Delphi products in the future I have a Friends and Family discount code to get employee rates on most of their electronics. I'll post it later today.

I'll take some new pictures when I get out of work.

Just splice the OEM adapter behind the panel to the cig adapter that came with the Skyfi2. Then shove all that stuff behind the panel and run the power cord out.

Yeah, intend to try it on the dash first, but if reception is poor, i will consider the roof.  I changed the head unit to one with an AUX-in port, so no need for FM modulation (no stations free up here in the Bay Area anyway).

And yes please post pics, and if you can, the splice for the power adapter.

If you get the FM direct kit it acts like a splitter between antennas. You plug in your oem antenna to it along with the XM one. When you turn on your XM radio it switches over to your XM antenna as the main antenna and it wont matter whether or not you have any open frequencies. I will try to take a picture of the wire splice. It's 105 here everyday so I'm not too motivated to sit in my car for extended periods of time.

Re: Finally finished my Head Unit+SkyFi2+Amp+12" sub install! pics inside

the further north you are, the more of an angle the satellite is. mine worked fine inside the car when i live in atlanta, but in new england my reception went to crap when i wasnt driving south or west.

i ran the antenna wire along the floor. the plastic pieces under where the doors close comes up incredibly easily. then i ran along the driver's side and then up underneath the rubber weather stripping and out to the roof.

I use to live in Rochester, NY, 40 miles south of Lake Ontario. Never once had a problem.

it probably also has to do with the fact that the roads i drive on are surrounded, and in some cases covered by thick brush. the trees really can affect reception. i have much better luck in winter time smile

Damn that sucks that you ran out of wire for your XM antennae.  I was able to run the one in my wife's new Honda Odyssey from the front all the way to the rear with wire to spare.  XM is pretty sweet! embeer

Re: Finally finished my Head Unit+SkyFi2+Amp+12" sub install! pics inside

I am a little pissed at my local Subie dealer. I went in to order to the single din pocket. They told me it would be in, in about a week. Three weeks later no word from them so I called. After looking they ound the part, and told me they lost the paper work to give me a call. So I drove down there to pick it up. Ofcourse it was the wrong part. They ordered the regular pocket without silver cover. It has been 4 weeks since I installed my HU and now I am going to have to drive around for another week with the hole in my dash. This sux. Anybody know the part number for the pocket with the silver cover?
