Re: Is this bad? 5 Y/o TV took a sh!t

This is a still image on the TC. It's also upside down. But I guess I suck at making gifs. Does anyone know about the different boards inside an LCD TV and which one controls the ambient light sensor on a Vizio Eco. It Would be nice to fix instead of replace. We don't watch a ton of TV, so I'm pretty disappointed that this died after only 5 years

I install flat panels, don't know much about the internals. I would never suggest a Vizio for any of my customers though, only Samsung and LG. On a side note, GO BUCKS! I'm in Reynoldsburg.

Re: Is this bad? 5 Y/o TV took a sh!t

My dad's 70 inch Vizio recently had the board go out. Still under the two year warranty, though.

My friend's Vizio took a dump not long into its life as well.

I've had good luck with my Panasonic, which is approaching 6 years old with no problems.

When I scoped this one out I found out it was built by with Samsung internals,  Vizio doesn't make any of their screens or boards.  I just bought a Sony today.  Typically I think they are over priced for what you get, but I liked the TV and it was only 328 for a 40" TV.

I'd still like to fix this one if I could figure out which board to replace.  It would be nice to have a TV in the bedroom.

I considered panasonic, but the Sony look almost as good, and was 328 instead of 499.

Samsung has had tons of problems over the years... there's a class action lawsuit over an entire generation of their LCD TVs from 5-6 years ago - all of them died at the 3-year mark.

I have a Sharp 65" and love it.

Well that's a decent explanation for this.  We don't use it very much so maybe making it to 5 years was a good thing?  Still, I'd throw a little money at it if I can 1) fins out what board houses the ambient light sensor, and 2) find a replacement for a reasonable price.  I don't think i'd put more than 80 or 100 into it.

If you don't find a lot of info online about a common failed component you can swap out then I would just open it up and see if you can spot any bad capacitors.  I'd say more than half the time a couple bad capacitors are the death of modern electronics.  Easy to replace if you can pull the board and have some skills or can watch youtube smile

Just after my last post I found one guy who sourced this same problem to 2 bad capacitors.  It's worth a look, and it will be cheap to get replacement parts.  I suck at soldering, so we'll see how that replacement goes...

Re: Is this bad? 5 Y/o TV took a sh!t

I had a Samsung that had the motherboard/power control board shit out one month after it was out of warranty.  I raised holy hell on twitter and facebook after trying to get it replaced, Samsung came through with a replacement TV at their cost (and paid for a call tag for me to send the defective).  This was in the infancy of Twitter, though...   hmm

5 years old?  Sad to say that it's past the date for most CE products' lifecycle.  Try finding a local repair shop, it'll be cheaper than replacing it, IMO.
