Alright, this is potentially a bit of a crazy idea, but this is what I'm thinking of doing:

1. Get engine inspected by local shop to make sure there was no damage (pretty sure not, it looks like I have a coolant leak but no other mechanical issues).
2. Buy back the 92x from insurance if the engine looks fine
3. Purchase another 92x with a blown engine (may take a few months to find one somewhat local)
4. Transfer engine + all mods over to new 92x
5. Profit... confused driving

I think this could make sense financially. ~$2.5K for the donor Saabaru, $1.7K for my salvage, ??? for labor, then I can do timing belt and clutch while my engine is out. I'll keep this thread updated...

Re: skidave's 05 Aero

I'm picking up serx7's Aero this weekend!!!  banana

Just wondering what you guys would recommend doing while the engine is out. I'm having my engine swapped in, and very seriously considering having the 5MT swapped as well. Mine has 70K miles and a lifetime warranty vs. the 145K miles 5MT that's currently in the new Aero, so I'm probably going to add that in to the work and then sell the 145K 5MT to help cover the labor.

Soooo, this is what I'm thinking:
1. Swap engine / 5MT
2. Timing belt + rest of 105K engine stuff
3. Clutch

What else would you do while the engine and transmission is out? I'm debating doing engine and 5MT mounts, as the car has 145K on it and they're likely well past their prime. I also have my springs and struts that I was going to install myself on my old Aero but thankfully didn't before it was totaled haha, so I think I may see what the shop would charge to do that. Anything else that you guys would recommend? Maybe I'll have them do the RSB if I'm having them do the suspension  driving

Re: skidave's 05 Aero

I would replace as many of the shitty rubber bushings that you can with upgraded Whiteline (or whatever). Control Arms bushings, trailing arm bushings, steering rack bushings, shifter bushings, swaybar bushings, etc.

The shop is going to pull the engine and 5MT from the donor first, so I'll have them inspect the bushings to see what condition they're in. I may just replace the ones worn badly to save some $$$ unless you guys think it would be a good idea to do all bushings regardless of their condition.

Also, any thoughts on doing the engine mounts / 5MT mount? I would probably get the STi Group N mounts if you guys think it's a worthwhile use of ~$250.

Errol, I'll say hi to your LGT on Monday assuming it's still at the shop  cool

Re: skidave's 05 Aero

Haven't posted an update for awhile...

I swapped wheels/tires with my totaled blue Aero in order to pass inspection, and had the windshield replaced. Here is how it looked a week ago when it was headed to the shop:

On Monday I got my totaled Aero to the shop so they could grab the engine and transmission. I was able to check out the progress on the silver Aero!

5MT is also getting swapped:

More to come later, hopefully in a few days!

Any chance you have an extra A/C line that runs along the TMIC?

Re: skidave's 05 Aero

Time for an update, unfortunately no good news...

Engine swap is completed but the engine is now knocking (the "good" one from my totaled aero). I got the totaled aero towed to the shop to have the engine pulled, and when we were there we jumped it to drive it into the shop. The engine was fine then.

The shop owner had told me initially that he would honor the lifetime warranty he had on the engine if we did the swap over to the new aero, so that's one of the big reasons why I had it done. Now that the new engine is knocking, he wants me to figure out what I want to do with the car (he didn't mention anything about a warranty replacement). Is it unreasonable of me to suggest that he replace the engine on his dime, since it was fine going into the shop and he was planning on keeping the warranty on it? I haven't asked him about it yet just because I wanted to make sure I had thought it over ahead of time.
