Former Impreza owner, looking at buying a 92x and need some advice!

There's a low mileage '05 Linear available in my area for $2000. I want a simple, functional hatch or wagon with a stick and cruise control that's fun enough to drive, and this is the first one I've found that seems right. I don't care much about performance, so the Linear seems like a good fit. My hesitation with this one is that it's from Vermont and there's some serious rust going on. There is minor rust over the wheel wells, and the undercarriage is pitted. It would need exhaust work due to the rust. One brake caliper seized up while i was test driving it, though it had recently been replaced. The emergency brake doesn't work. It needs new tires all around. Is this car worth investing time and energy in, or is it a nightmare? Since it only has 87,000 miles I would be willing to spend money on it to have a decent manual hatchback with cruise control, but the rust makes me very wary. Thanks for any advice you can offer!

Rust is the biggest issue by far, and having dealt with New England cars for my whole life I would not buy a rusty VT car. There are probably holes through the rear strut towers, that happens even on 9-2xs in milder climates. Leaky brake line junctions, rotted subframes, front fenders, brake backing plates, they all fail and are a pain to resolve.

Thanks everyone. I think I answered my question just by writing it down! Helps to have confirmation though. Neat little car, maybe I'll find another one someday.
