Is a Linear ever a better purchase than an Aero?

It seems to me that there may be at least a few reasons why purchasing a Linear is not such a bad idea after all.

I understand that an Aero has more horsepower and is tons more fun to drive. Understood. However, the fantastic look of the body style, the Subaru underneath, the improvements that make it a SAAB, and the AWD, can all be found in a Linear.

So, if I find a very clean Linear, can someone make an argument that buying a well-priced Linear today is better than waiting for an (expensive) Aero in the future? Please, somebody tell me that a 2.5 Linear is still a special vehicle, even without the 2.0 turbo.

Sorry.  If the 92x only came in a Linear, we would not have bought one.

With a few modifications, my Linear handled superbly.  At an HPDE at Sonoma Raceway, a seasoned Miata time-trialer commented on how well it handled.

Still, it had less power than my motorcycle, so it really depends on what you're after.

Re: Is a Linear ever a better purchase than an Aero?

Just get what you can afford or what you think is best. I had a 5 speed manual 08 outback with the naturally aspirated 2.5, it was a good vehicle. The engine was weak but reliable. I ended up giving the Outback to the wife to use as a go ski beater. I got bored with it, no boost. Welcome to the forum, you just made it before it is completely dead.

Re: Is a Linear ever a better purchase than an Aero?

I have one of each, the Linear is a functional, comfortable car that gets solid mpg on 87. It's not fast nor is it particularly exciting as the stock suspension is pretty soft, but for $2-3k for a decent one it's a good buy.

These are helpful comments. Thank you. And yet, the Linear still provides 173 hp for a very small amount of cash. I can't get that much hp with a non-GTI Golf.

If memory serves, it's 165 for 2005 and 173 for 2006, with the variable valve timing making the difference.

I really liked my car, but it did lack power.  I fixed that with later cars, but at a price.  I miss the utility of the car combined with the good handling.  I needed some updates to be satisfied with the latter, but it's easily achievable.

Re: Is a Linear ever a better purchase than an Aero?

my drivers license hasnt been revoked yet since owning a linear auto...  banana

in seriousness, the linear will be cheaper to drive...you get to run 87 octane and get slightly better mpg...you wont win any races but if you dont care about that then maybe the linear is a good fit for you too.... i did a bunch of suspension work and got some sticky tires...that plus uel headers makes my linear so much fun to drive.... rain, shine , or snow

Re: Is a Linear ever a better purchase than an Aero?

Okay, I get it. Helpful information.

However, if you had a Linear with a manual transmission, what would you do to make it just a little bit more special? So, stickier rubber, I'm sure. But what else?

Re: Is a Linear ever a better purchase than an Aero?

Add in a 'pod' type air filter, a COBB or Stromung exhaust if you an find them, some nice 17" wheels, springs with a modest drop and detail it. You won't be as fast as an Aero, but you'll keep looking back at it after you park.
