Oil Leak Source?

New guy here. I am by no means an advanced mechanic, but have some decent knowledge.

Bought the '05 9-2x 2.5i linear (so EJ253) about 6 months ago, so I'm unsure of the work that has been done to the car. Overall, it runs really well. Roughly 140k miles on it currently. Had the car up on jack stands to inspect my brakes (pads are in need of changing) where I noticed oil all over the lower portion of the engine. Timing belt is bone dry, engine not burning oil at all. The accumulation of oil is primarily around the oil pan (which I cleaned up a bit), especially around the rearward portion of the pan and behind it. Oil is also making its way on to the transmission case, where it seems to be less "caked" and more oily, in addition to some areas in front of the pan as well. I'm hoping its not a rear main seal. Oil pan seal? Something else?

Here's a few pics:

Any help is appreciated, thx!

Oil cooler is a suspect, if Linears have one.

Re: Oil Leak Source?

Strange that there is a drop of oil on the bottom of the oil filter. If you change your own oil, the next time I would inspect the area around the oil filter. Or you could also use a small mirror to inspect the area. I found a makeup mirror at the local Goodwill and have used it multiple times identifying issues.

As others have mentioned the head gaskets are another potential issue and I would look at the bottom of the head gasket seals for any leaking or seepage.

Re: Oil Leak Source?

rear main seal (usually the biggest culprit because it goes ignored)
cam seals
crank seal
oil pan seal
valve cover seals
leaky power steering pump

All very common on Subarus (or any car) 10+ years old.
To really solve it, pull the motor and do a reseal

Re: Oil Leak Source?

i had a similar issue with my linear automatic...i had the same oil spray all underneath.. .i thought my pan or filter was leaking but the cooler lines had rusted to the point of cracking...i believe mine was cracked near the brake booster...
