Need Help in Denver, CO 9-2x

We purchased a 2005 9-2X A for my son.  No mods and only 95k miles.  Figured it would be a good car for him to learn to drive manual and keep him off his phone while driving.  He has had it almost two years now and we have put twice what we paid for it into it and now the engine is shot.  Seized up on him on his way to school last week.  It has less than 1k miles since we had a new Stage 1 clutch, thermostat and timing belt done.  Before that we had the power steering rack, new valve cover gaskets, spark plugs, front axle seals and trany service.  Also had windows tinted and front and rear bumpers and some other body work done and painted.

So my question is, part this thing out or spend the $7k that was quoted to us for a new Subaru short block and put it back together?  Does anyone know a good Subaru shop local?

Thanks

Re: Need Help in Denver, CO 9-2x

$7k for an engine in a 95k mile car is kind of insane imho.

Try awdpirates.net for local shop recommendations. And ask for current shop recommendations, because I just picked on from an old thread and they (someplace east of Denver, I forget the shop's name) had since become regarded as absurdly overpriced.

You could probably also buy my 06 Aero with 78k miles for the same $7.5k you were quoted for just an engine in that one. PM if interested.

Yeah, that's a price a dealer wouldn't even quote.  You'd be better off buying a used wrx longblock that has good compression.  Besides checking the oil every time you put gas in, it's also a good idea to get the oil analyzed when you change it.  I use Blackstone labs with the oil changes on my Forester to both keep an eye on the engine and prove that I'm doing regular oil changes.

Don't know where you are exactly, but Superupair in Boulder is an excellent shop, not the cheapest, but fair and super skilled on Subarus.  They maintained my 9-2x for the nine years we lived in Boulder, and I have nothing but good things to say about them.

I agree - only used them once, but I was really happy with their service and specific knowledge.

In Denver I've had good experience with Mile-Hi Automotive. They're a Saab/Subaru specialist shop.

Ask about a JDM engine install.  We had on installed several years ago and it is still running strong.  It was $3745 for engine/clutch/flywheel/etc.  Probably wouldn't be that cheap now but would probably be cheaper than $7K.

Re: Need Help in Denver, CO 9-2x

You could part it, but wouldn't get 7k.
Bad motor looking at 2 grand maybe 3+ if the strut towers are good. Rusted towers are the real value killer on these things.

Also what does 'seized up' mean? like valve damage? did the timing belt fail? low oil and got rod knock?
