2005 Aero 5-Speed 108k What should I pay?

I'm really interested in a 2005 9.2x Aero with 108k miles for sale near me. The car has spent almost all of its life in the D.C. area. It seems like it is mostly stock and hasn't been beat up. The timing belt was replaced around 90k. The current owner and seller is a mechanic and has only had it for a month. He claims that he wants to keep it but can't afford to because his other car won't sell. In the month that hes had it he's done some work to it but nothing major. His asking price is $9000 but he says its negotiable. The KBB value for the car is around $4500 in excellent condition, but I know this is a rare car, especially to find one in good condition. I am wondering what would be a reasonable offer to counter with. My plan right now is to ask for $7000 and be willing to pay $7500. Is that reasonable or too low/hight? I have the Carfax and the maintenance log of the current owner and will send it to anyone willing to help.

Way too high, IMO.  That's a $4K car at best.

Although they are rare, they aren't particularly valuable at this point.  And the biggest concern you will hear about if you review this forum is rust of the rear shock towers.  You have to disassemble the trim in the rear of the car to see it, and isn't reparable if it's too far gone.  And if it is reparable, good luck finding someone to do it, unless you can do sheet metal fabricating work yourself.

Search this forum and be horrified....

Yeah I've been seeing a lot of posts about the rust problem. The seller mentioned "a tiny spot of quarter panel rust" and the fact that it was in D.C. does not bode well. I wish there was an easier way to check to see how bad it is...

The quarter panel rust and strut tower rot are separate issues, lots of Subarus rot out the quarter panels, only GG wagons (02-07) get the rotted strut towers. You can remove a rear wheel and look at the tower around the rear seat brackets (which are easy to see from the wheel well as they are bolted from the outside) for discoloration or even holes.  This is not as thorough as pulling the interior but if you see signs here the situation is well advanced. People have looked and saw the sound deadening foam or seatback.

Quarter panel rust issue sucks too but it's just cosmetic.

Did you end up checking out the car? The price does seem rather high, I think $6k would be more reasonable. How does the car fax look, has their been a lot of maintenace? new clutch etc.

Re: 2005 Aero 5-Speed 108k What should I pay?

$9k is pretty high, maybe it would fetch close to that if it was otherwise in mint condition.
With any rust that value drops dramatically (in my eyes), especially since you can get rust free ones elsewhere for cheaper.
Also the 06 has a better engine and transmission and those are more valuable and better cars in my opinion.

So for this car, with the low miles, and potential rust, i don't see it worth more than $6k, and down from there pending the rest of its condition and maintenance history
