Linear Manual swap into a Aero

Hey guys I have a Stage 2+ 9-2x and I absolutely love it. It's currently a Automatic transmission and I have the opportunity to pick up everything I need for a manual swap from a 2005 9-2x linear for really really cheap. I want the manual transmission for the faster acceleration and because I've always wanted a manual. I don't have a problem doing the work and actually enjoy that kind of stuff but I do want to get someone's advice with more experience on the idea on what I can use and how the non-turbo gear ratio will work in my car. So far I know I can't use the ecu and wiring harness and I'm planning on grabbing the transmission, pedal cluster, clutch slave cylinder and mount, transmission support/mount, and I would like to know if I'm forgetting anything! Thanks!

Re: Linear Manual swap into a Aero

I would imagine this to be quite difficult from Linear 5MT to replace the Aero 4EAT. Your best bet would be to source the hardware from an Aero 5MT or a WRX 5MT.

I'd imagine that there are quite a few wiring differences between the two.

Re: Linear Manual swap into a Aero

I think that as long as the transmission and rear end are matched, ratio-wise, it would work.  That is, it'd be no more difficult than any other auto to manual conversion.  This question comes up from time to time, but I don't recall anyone every actually doing it.  It's not trivial.  Be prepared for headaches.

Linear and Aero with 5MT had different final drive ratios, so you might get better acceleration with the Linear setup.

Re: Linear Manual swap into a Aero

I've gone from a 4EAT to a 6MT.  The shop certainly charged me enough to do it.  For sure would not be worth doing on a normal car.

Re: Linear Manual swap into a Aero

Alright thanks everyone for replying and helping me sort out a few little issues. I'm going to go for it and try it! I'll be able to use a 2005 WRX MT ecu and wiring harness even if I have the linear transmission right?

Re: Linear Manual swap into a Aero

the amount of work to convert to any 5speed will be the same, its just a matter of getting all the appropriate parts to match with the transmission you get
things you'll need regardless:
- transmission crossmember
- hydraulic pedal box
- clutch master cylinder
- driveshaft
- shifter linkage
- a few custom wiring fixes to retain reverse lights, neutral sensing, and clutch pedal starting lockout
(possibly front axles depending what year of transmission you get)

things you'll need that specifically match the type of transmission you get
- clutch / flywheel / throwout bearing
- slave cylinder

realistically a 92x Linear 5-speed transmission is probably fine. if you got one of those, get an 06+ WRX clutch (push style). you can find these used on ebay for reasonably cheap with flywheel (same clutch and flywheel up through the new WRX models)
if you get an 05 92x Aero 5-speed transmission, its a pull style clutch like 02-05 WRX

Did this ever get built, I’m thinking to do the same
