If you knew you would only have a car for 6 months, what would you get

I find myself in an odd scenario and Iím looking for advice. My 2008 Saab Turbo X has been a great car, but it is time to move on. Itís still running well at 120k miles but I am ready for something different. Iím going to purchase a new JL Wrangler Sahara. But the power top I want will not be available until late summer. So Iím going to wait until September to order so I can get the 2019 model year. Delivery will be in October.

This means a 6 month wait and I miss out on the summer weather in the mountains. I want to purchase something fun in the interim. The vehicle will be a daily driver and must have rear seats for a baby and booster seat. If I didnít have to take the kids to daycare I would just drive my Elise. The budget is the same as the Wrangler, ~$45k. Here is what Iím considering.

-Work with the Jeep dealership and just pick something on the lot that is a manual with a soft top that I will trade in later. A practical solution that gets me 4 wheeling.
-Pick up a fun 2+2 convertible like a BMW M4
-Pick up a 2+2 Lotus Evora

What summer car would you get in this scenario?

Probably a cheap exotic (or something with a v10/v12/w12) with questionable maintenance records.  If something breaks, oh well.  If not, then it's a fun ride for 6 months smile
If you need a backseat, then how about a w12 Touareg?

Why not use the TurboX for 6 more months? This seems like the obvious answer for me - from a financial and common sense standpoint.

This sounds like an awful choice.  I don't think he wants something he needs to dump money in and worry about breaking.

That is an option. But I have already saved for the purchase of the Wrangler. I was ready to buy in February, but there have been a lot of production delays of the new model. Now, the cash is just sitting there and I'd like to purchase something fun with it.

Why not go on leaseswap and assume a 6 month lease on something really interesting?  You would take no hits on depreciation and have no repairs or maintenance concerns.

I hadn't heard of this before. I'll have to look into it more. A quick search showed many cars with 1-2 years left on the lease however.

Back "seat" of an Evora is miserable, booster seat would probably work, I can't see how a baby seat would fit. Even with the front seat slid forward it is difficult to get much back there, the opening is narrow. Given the lack of replacement parts in the US I'm more nervous about driving my Evora than I was with my Elise. I assume you'd be selling this after the six months, unloading an Evora will not be as easy as a more mainstream car.

TL,DR: get a bigger convertible like a 3 or 4 series or A4.

If you can find a good one, Isuzu Vehicross.  Ugly but fun to drive.  Or a Subaru SVX?

Re: If you knew you would only have a car for 6 months, what would you get

Test drove a 430i convertible yesterday. I really like the interior and the back seats are a good size for my kids. I have them looking for a 2015-16 manual convertible M4, I'm heavily leaning towards this. It was a large BMW dealer and they did not have a single manual on the lot. My neighbor is a Jeep salesman and he is looking into used JKs for me. And again, despite being a large dealership, they did not have any manuals on the lot either. It's just...sad.

Never liked the Jeep manuals.  I only like manuals in sporty cars.  In a truck or SUV they always feel like tractors.  The Jeep's have such a long throw.

Re: If you knew you would only have a car for 6 months, what would you get

Our TJ's 5MT felt like a throwback to 1947. I had a neighbor with a manual JK that had one more gear (!!) but shifted like shit as well.

I'm still of a mind that this is a very poor financial decision - although you're welcome to do with your money as you please. From my perspective, the 6-month depreciation on a 2008 Saab vs. the depreciation on a 2015-16 M4 'vert is likely a factor of 40 or 50. You're going to burn a bunch of money in that 6-month period, no matter how you look at it.

If you've got $45k saved up for the new Jeep, sit on it and buy the new Jeep in 6 months.

If you really want to burn some money and have some car fun, plan a ridiculous trip to Vegas with the family and do an exotics track day or something.

I understand this sentiment. The older JKs have the shifter mounted directly to the transmission and rattled around a lot. The new JL has it mounted to the body. It feels much smoother than the JK and has a shorter throw.

Buying an expensive car that is intended to be driven is never a good financial decision. Whats important is buying what you like and what you can afford without financially sacrificing other aspects of your life. The depreciation of my P85D is about equivalent to this entire purchase, and I have no regrets about buying the Tesla. I may keep this new car a lot longer than 6 months if I really enjoy it, but I wont let the depreciation control by decision.

This is an insane statement to me. That is what is so good about it!

Not that I want a super long/sloppy throw in a sports car. I definitely don't. But in an SUV or a truck? Fantastic!

Re: If you knew you would only have a car for 6 months, what would you get

I had to widen my search all the way to Fort Lauderdale, but I found the M4 convertible manual with the interior I wanted. I just put down the deposit today. I'll have it shipped to Colorado next week. Its a 2015 with 33k miles. I'm excited, I may not be getting a Jeep for a while.

Great looking car!  Is that the Fox Red leather?  We have a 2009 M3 here at my work with a similar interior color.
