Upcoming Hot Hatches?

As my Saabaru ages more and more Iíve started thinking about what I want to replace it Ė but thereís nothing too convincing out in the market right now which is 100% up my alley. These may just make me keep the saabaru a little while longer so I can grab one of these!

2019 Ford Focus ST Ė soooo you FoSTers, whatís the story with this? I read that the Fiesta ST is no longer coming to the states when it is redesigned but is the 2019 ST? Or will Europe get it as a 2019 and weíll get it in 2020? Iím not clued in to FoST news so Iím out of the loop but man does this redesign look awesome! If the Fiesta redesign interior is any indicator it looks like the interior will be stepped up and not so busy looking as the current ST.

Subaru Viziv Tourer concept teaser. They released a teaser short in advance of the Geneva show this March where it will be unveiled in full. No information on this one besides a bunch of us wagon/hatch fans hoping and praying that this is a new WRX wagon that will come to the states. Given Subaruís disappointing concept reality history though I donít have much hope for this, and I have even less hope for it coming to the US vs just Japan or Japan and Europe. The below shot was Ďenhancedí to turn up the brightness in the shadows as opposed to the main dark teaser.

Re: Upcoming Hot Hatches?

The new FoST is not good looking to me.  But I also wasn't a fan of the changes they made to the 2015-2017s either.

The FoST really is a great car for the dollar, but at the end of the day FWD is FWD.  You can't just go WOT from a dig without wheel hopping or putting a stiff motor mount on (yeah vibrations!) in stock power form.  If the street conditions aren't perfect (ie. above 60F and completely dry) then you can't put the stock power down.  It's just too much for me to want to keep the car beyond it's warranty.

Re: Upcoming Hot Hatches?

What you really want is a German car.  Do what crxgator did.

Re: Upcoming Hot Hatches?

I'm in a similar situation, I want a more refined hatch but very much want to avoid Audi level unreliability and parts prices. Maybe that isn't an option. I tried a few new Mazdas and they are cheaper and nosier feeling than current Subarus, so that isn't going to work. At the moment a 3 door GTI is top of the list, that would mean MY16 or earlier.

Re: Upcoming Hot Hatches?

After further digging, looks like the Focus ST production is going to stop for a year in the US and they will move production from Michigan to a China plant to save $$. Sooo wouldn't be sold here until mid 2019 vs. end of this year potentially for Europe since they'll continue to be produced in Germany. ARG.

I like the design of the 2019 a lot, I think it looks more like a Mazda 3 hatch which I mean as a compliment cuz man Mazdas as of late are looking great. I like the changes they made to the current generation except I don't care much for the rear bumper design on the current one.

And who knows the story on that Viziz Tourer concept. We'll some come March I guess.

2018 ST? Looks like they can be had for pretty cheap. But hmmm they don't sell that hot looking dark blue color on the 2018. 2017 used? great. ha.

Perfect. Road trip! Although I kinda like the mid-cycle refreshed ones more than the original years. That'd be years 16-18?

Other options: GTIs look too plain to me, but worth considering for a slightly upgraded interior over the Ford. (I hate the plaid seats so would have to get leather)

Not really any other hot hatches/wagons out there that are similarly fun.

Mazda killed off the Mazdaspeed in pursuit of going more upmarket.
Base Mazda 3 might be slightly fun but slow.
Bimmer and Audi wagons can be had for OK prices used but my fam hasn't had the best experience with used Audi/BMW maintenance so I don't want to open that can of worms really.
Volvo V60 ... no manual and I don't imagine its the most fun to drive
Buick Regal TourX .. wait, you stop laughing! I think they look great but Car & Driver says they're terribly unresponsive.
VW Golf wagons ... would meet size requirements but not sure on the fun-to-drive factor. I do think crxgator's is a beauty with the lowering.

As per some of my previous comments in other EV threads I'm also down with a good driving EV but the market is still so sparse and they don't meet what I'm looking for w/o too much compromise. If I was going strictly for economy commuter a Volt would make perfect sense for my commute but I don't think it has enough of the EV zoom factor that is half of the appeal of an EV. Fingers crossed in 5 years EV tech will be to a point where there will be fun-to-drive EVs in various bodystyles vs. most of the one-size-fits-all economy car current landscape.

The main reason why I got the cloth is because they look badass in plaid! lol Plus leather sucks in the winter and summer...

Re: Upcoming Hot Hatches?

Plaid fucking sucks.  It's a great pattern for boxers or pajama pants and that's about it.

Love the plaid, all my MK1 and MK2 GTIs and GLIs had loud seat materials.

Re: Upcoming Hot Hatches?

I have a plaid folding seat in my '77 VW Van big_smile

Kind of amazing that it's something VW has maintained as a heritage item for this long.

Agreed, but I think this redesign is an improvement to the 2015 change.
