2006 Aero 5MT Help with CEL P1410

Hey all,

Just bought a completely stock black 2006 Aero 5MT with about 120k miles big_smile and unfortunately have the check engine light on  sad .   Autozone says its code P1410- fuel tank pressure system, however, the internet says that code is related to the secondary air injection system.  My plan was to bring it to Wrenchrite, an independent subaru shop near me in CT, however, they refused to work on the car since it is not a subaru.

Anyways, I need to pass emissions, and after reading online here and on NASIOC, it seems like my best option is to delete the secondary air system and have the codes cleared.  Right now, I'm focused more on just passing emissions and dealing with the problem later since I have temporary plates that expire on the 18th.  I've cleared the code using a scanner, but the CEL came back on in a few minutes.  I also reset the ECU by unplugging the negative battery terminal for about 10 minutes while the car was already warmed up, but again, the CEL came back on within a few minutes.  People on the forums say to just find someone who can clear the code using an accessport or a tactrix cable, however I have no idea how to go about finding anyone.

Also, the previous owner had the air pump replaced, and one of the valves replaced as well (probably the drivers side one) but the light stays on!  So it seems like it is probably the other valve that is stuck.  How would I know if the valve(s) are stuck open or closed?  Is there a way to tell the difference?

Any ideas or help will be greatly appreciated!

As long as the car idles ok don't worry about which valve is broken (they all eventually will), just follow the advice you found already. Either contact a shop (like Rodman suggested), or find a local subaru facebook group and see if anyone with a tactrix can help you out.

Depending on your plans for the car getting in touch with a tuning shop is a good idea anyhow.

You absolutely do not want to replace the parts on the system. It always, always fails. Previous owner of mine shelled out nearly 2k replacing the parts, and it failed again.

If you're not feeling ready to install block-off plates yourself, again, a subaru shop/tuner will help you out.

There's EFI near you, as well as Bren Tuning probably not too far depending where you are.

Welcome aboard

"Secondary air injection valve system stuck open"
meaning one of the 2 secondary air injection solenoids is fault or possibly just caked with soot/carbon in the pipes. hard to say.
they are very annoying to replace... you basically have to pull the manifold off, well depending which side it is.
fortunately it has absolutely ZERO impact on performance or how the car runs. so you could theoretically delete that code by editing the map with a Tactrix cable... and never worry about it again.

Re: 2006 Aero 5MT Help with CEL P1410

I got a video of my car that just started doing this today. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TJ556STN_jU

I didn't get a chance to check the CEL since it was smelling like burnt plastic so I had to disconnect the battery since the stupid fan didn't stop running.
