Prospective Aero buyer and no service history

About to make an offer but have concerns. Car seems almost too good to be true so I'm hesitant. Car looks fantastic and drives great but is 160k with zero maintainance records and owner has no knowledge of any repairs. I guess I need to assume if I buy that it will need timing belt plus water pump, other belts, thermostat, some hoses, plugs, wires, potentially a new clutch soon, etc. Tires and brakes seem okay visually. Also it's an East Coast car but no indication of any rust issues. Asking 8k which is pretty firm and I'd be looking at potentially another $1000-$2000 plus for piece of mind. Still nit bad in my opinion because of the difficulty of finding a cosmetically nice car. Any thoughts?

Does the Carfax check out? How many owners, and how long has the current owner had the car? Is this a dealer or private sale?

I can run a CARFAX report for you, but if he's not going to come off $8,000, I would pass.  That's over-priced for the mileage.

Re: Prospective Aero buyer and no service history

I have the Carfax and its very clean, but has no records of maintainance after 35000 miles and also shows 2 recalls I assume never were addressed. One for the air bags and one for the front control arms. Since there are no more Saab dealers I assume Subaru won't honor the recalls, or will they? I may pass on the car which is hard. Too many poor conditioned cars (cosmetically) and not many MT Aero's for sale. I don't concider them rare, but they are scarce so if this one doesn't work out another will pop up in the next few months.

You have to go to your nearest Saab service center (you have to look it up online, a lot of times it is a GM dealership).  A lot of nice ones pop up on here, but you'll have to be willing to travel if you want to get a nice one.  Plus it's better to find one in a non-rust belt state anyways.

Re: Prospective Aero buyer and no service history

It's not worth more than $6,000 in stellar condition considering the money you have to put into it.

Re: Prospective Aero buyer and no service history

Thanks everyone! If I can get the price down I'll still concider it. The price of comparable cosmetic condition WRX wagons in my area is about $3000 more, and because I like the look etc better it's  still an option. Sometimes you just need to gamble, I've done it before and its paid off on other cars. I'm not looking to sell any time soon what ever I buy so I'm being very carefull.
